This book is a mystery that takes place in a futuristic London England. The London Eye Mystery reminds me of Nancy Drew meets the Jetsons. The story begins with a great description of London with its rain, cloudy skies, and the Thames River (Dowd, 2007: 1). The description of London sets the scene for the perfect spooky mystery. The Mystery centers on a boy named Salim and his family. Salim’s family decides to take him for a ride on the Eye because Salim has never ridden on it before. The Eye looks likes a cross between a bicycle and a spaceship. They get free tickets and Salim gets on The Eye to go for the ride of life. However, the ride of Salim’s life becomes the fright of Salim’s and his family’s life (Dowd, 2007: 3).
It turns out that Salim has been kidnapped and is being held in a place called The Barracks which is the tallest tower block in all of South London. This building has been an eyesore and it used to be the place where all the socially unacceptable people where sent to live. Therefore, many people, including the narrator’s dad want the building torn down (Dowd, 2007:10). The narrator’s dad is also Salim’s uncle and Salim seems to have been kidnapped as revenge against the narrator’s dad. The kidnappers feel that if they have Salim then, the building will not be torn down.
Both the London Police and Salim’s family go on a mad race to find him and the finally do find him on the 24th floor of The Barracks. Salim explains that he tried to get out of the Barracks but he was trapped and that it was bad at night because of the smell and the noises. But, it was okay during the day because he watched the clouds and the weather (Dowd, 2007: 314). Salim is fine and he ends up leaving London England and going to New York However, the narrator feels that whether Salim is in England or not the day that he got on the Eye will always be in his memory.
