Table of Content

To begin with, puberty is a natural thing you should not worry because this happens to everyone. Adolescence is an important stage in an individual’s life because the growing child suffers many biological and psychosocial change in life. There are many hormonal changes that occur in the body makes the body. Acne can occur as a result of these hormonal changes. acne, defined as pimples on the skin due to overactive sebaceous glands. Experiencing acne can lead the adolescent to withdraw socially, especially if they are self-conscious about their skin or teased (Lally & Valentine-French, 2017). A teen’s circadian rhythm also changes which causes them to stay up late. Most schools require them to wake up early which doesn’t allow their brain to work its best. She may be uncomfortable for some time because the body is adjusting to the new changes.

Many changes occur in the brain. The limbic system is developed which controls emotion but the prefrontal cortex which is involved in planning and decision-making has not fully developed yet. Adolescents are often emotional, make poor decisions, and engage in risky behavior Because of all the changes mental illness may occur, 50% of the mental illness occurs by the age of 14 and 75% occurs by age 24 (Lally & Valentine-French, 2017).

Adolescents typically spend less time with parents and built relationships outside of the family. Your child may not like your instructions and want to make her own decisions. Don’t strictly punish your child because of it or she will maintain more distance from you. Having a supportive parent will benefit the teenager and lead to the teen having less emotional issues.

Adolescents spend a lot of time with their peers which can affect them positively and negatively. During adolescence, peers are a source of support socially and friendship and adolescents with positive relationships are better adjusted and happier than adolescents that are isolated socially. Negative peer pressure, on the other hand, can lead adolescents to make riskier decisions than they would alone or with family. Deviant peer contagion is when peers encourage problem behavior by showing signs of approval like laughing that then increase the likelihood of future problem behavior(Lally & Valentine-French, 2017). Adolescents typically start a romantic relationship at this time. By the end of adolescence, most American teens have had at least one romantic relationship (Dolgin, 2011). Dating serves many purposes for teens, including having fun, companionship, status, socialization, sexual experimentation, intimacy, and partner selection for those in late adolescence (Lally & Valentine-French, 2017).

During adolescence, individuals will develop their identity. Adolescents will question their sexuality, personality, aspirations in life, and political views. James Marcia developed 4 identity statuses. Identity foreclosure is a stage of self-identity where a person has an identity but hasn’t explored other options or ideas. They usually follow their parents’ footsteps. Identity diffusion is the stage where a person has neither explored the options nor made a commitment to an identity. Those who persist in this identity may drift aimlessly with little connection to those around them or have little sense of purpose in life. Identity moratorium is where people are actively exploring in an attempt to establish identity but have yet to have made any commitment. Identity achievement refers to those who after exploration has made a commitment (Lally & Valentine-French, 2017). This is not typically achieved during adolescence.

Adolescents are egocentric. The imaginary audience is the adolescent’s belief that those around them are as concerned and focused on their appearance as they themselves are (Lally & Valentine-French, 2017). Adolescents often have the belief they are unique and only they have experienced certain emotions. They think that other people can never understand how they feel. Adolescents will engage in risky behaviors as a result of being “special” and feel like they will not suffer any negative consequences.
