The day was perfect on May 10, 1981 and it was Mother’s Day. The sun was shining warmly and the grass soft blades of emerald green on a background of a deep blue sky. To celebrate, my two sisters, my parents andl decided to have a bar-b-que. We invited our boyfriends, a few close family member and some friends. My sisters, Kay and Ilene, were celebrating their graduation from college.

After graduation, they were going to Hawaii with some of their classmates. Life was great. Laughter flowed freely as the sdcent of a fresh crust for a pie was in the air. My dad, Bart, was at the grill closely watching the hamburgers and hot dogs sizzle, making sure they did not burn. Ilene’s fiance Kevin and Kay’s boyfriend Jake had just returned from the store with buns, sodas and chips. We were all enjoying one another’s company. Kay had just taken the pie crust out of the oven and was taking it out the back door to cool when it slipped from her grasp and fell to the ground. She ws c! rushed. No one thought a whole lot about it.
