Beowulf the Epic Heros

An epic hero possesses superhuman qualities, embodies societal values, and is larger than life. Beowulf perfectly exemplifies this description. Throughout his legendary journey, he exhibits numerous superhuman qualities. His embodiment of societal values is also evident. Furthermore, Beowulf’s larger-than-life persona is undeniable. Notably, he demonstrates his superhuman strength in the intense battle against Grendel. Despite Grendel’s attacks on his chest, Beowulf’s mail shirt provides protection. With an unmatched display of strength, Beowulf seizes Grendel’s arms, forcibly pulls them behind his back, and tears them off entirely. Subsequently, Beowulf ventures into a treacherous swamp and swims down to the lake’s depths, a feat that consumes an entire day. Eventually, he reaches the cave where Grendel’s mother resides, leading to an intense confrontation. While facing immense adversity during the battle, Beowulf’s sword fails him. However, he seizes a colossal sword intended only for giants, defying human capabilities, and successfully slays Grendel’s mother. Beowulf decapitates Grendel and witnesses the blade melting due to the monster’s blood, leaving behind solely the sword’s hilt. Emerging from the lake’s depths, Beowulf carries the hilt and Grendel’s head, both requiring four men to transport.We witness his people’s values showcased when he assists Hrothgar in battling against Grendel. Beowulf becomes aware of Grendel’s wicked acts through stories shared by sailors. He proceeds to assemble a group of his best fourteen men in order to confront Grendel. When seeking guidance from his elders, they do not oppose his decision. Furthermore, he engages in combat with his bare hands, as his father once advised him, “Never put your sword where your feet would fear to tread.” Beowulf is regarded as larger than life when he declares that he does not require any assistance from Hrothgar or his men. Essentially, he informs Hrothgar that he does not depend on any support due to his immense strength.
