Sabrina Lall is furious and devastated about the murder of her sister, Jessica Lall, who was a respected barmaid in India. Sabrina claims that a man, who was already drunk with power because he possessed a gun and driven by greed, is to blame for Jessica’s death. This heartbreaking event happened when Jessica declined to serve him another drink. Sabrina reflects on the worth of life and reputation and wonders where justice can be sought in such situations.

In a just and egalitarian society, it is imperative for politicians and judges to uphold their principles and duty in determining what constitutes fairness and reasonableness. It is essential to ensure strict enforcement of the law against those who partake in workplace bullying, as such behavior frequently stems from the bully’s personal insecurities. Innocent individuals become targets simply because they are viewed as vulnerable.

Workplace bullying has negative consequences for both individuals and companies. The person being targeted suffers, while the company experiences a decrease in productivity. Therefore, it is crucial for companies to address and discipline workplace bullies effectively. According to research conducted by a professor at Windsor’s Odette School of Business, approximately 40% of Canadians have encountered one or more incidents of workplace bullying.

Not only were these cases officially reported, but there are also unreported cases to consider. Weak penalties for bullies essentially encourage their behavior as it goes unnoticed. Additionally, the responsibility for the mental distress suffered by bullying victims remains unanswered. It is difficult to accurately measure the extent of stress and its impact. The global economic crisis not only brings financial suffering but also takes an immeasurable toll on a significant part of the population. Among the hidden statistics that often remain unseen, instances of stress, anxiety, and even suicides can be found. Workplace bullying or harassment encompasses various actions such as spreading malicious rumors, engaging in gossip, intimidating others, using abusive language, socially isolating someone, and more.

Different forms of bullying can take place, not only in individual interactions. It can involve a collective singling out of someone or a few people who are perceived as different or unacceptable, such as because of their sexual orientation. Gay and lesbian individuals frequently encounter offensive remarks and mockery, both verbally and through the use of objects that belittle them. While physical harm may not be inflicted, the emotional consequences are profound and negatively affect the victim’s overall mental health.

Management’s failure to promptly address the issue can lead to severe health and psychological issues for the victim. It is vital for managers to stay informed and implement appropriate measures. Tragically, coworkers opt to ignore the situation, isolating the victim and demonstrating a self-centered mindset focused solely on themselves. This emphasizes the inherent selfishness of human nature. Research exposes the main factors and typical tactics employed in bullying. Nevertheless, without dedication from both management and colleagues, this problem persists and deteriorates.

Despite the implementation of strict laws, their effectiveness is limited. The company’s management avoids dealing with bullies due to concerns about legal repercussions and the potential drain on resources and time. Instead, they opt to disregard the issue in the hope that it will eventually vanish. The victim is often too traumatized to report the incident, and burdened with proving their case as most coworkers (acting as bystanders) are reluctant to speak up or provide evidence out of fear for their own job security. It is incumbent upon every individual in society to promote awareness against bullying.

In order to effectively deal with bullying, it is essential for the victim to learn how to say no and stand up for themselves. They should not ignore or dismiss the mistreatment they are experiencing. Keeping a record of all communication methods used by the bully, such as emails, letters, and notes, is crucial. I support Oprah Winfrey’s advice of surrounding oneself with inspiring individuals.
