Chess Is A Game Essay, Research Paper
Chess is a game, played by two participants. One participant plays with the white pieces, and the other participant dramas with the black pieces. Each participant has 16 pieces in the beginning of the game: one male monarch, one queen, two castles, two bishops, two knights, and eight pawns.
The game is played on a chess board, dwelling of 64 squares: eight rows and eight columns. The squares are alternately light ( white ) and dark colored.
The board must be laid down such that there is a black square in the lower left corner. To ease notation of moves, all squares are given a name. From the position of the white participant, the rows are numbered 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 ; the lowest row has figure 1, and the upper row has figure 8. The columns are named, from left to compensate, a, B, degree Celsius, vitamin D, vitamin E, degree Fahrenheit, g, h. Thus, at the 2nd row, there are eight white pawns, at the 7th row ; there are eight black pawns.
At the first row, from left to compensate, we have a: castle, knight, bishop, queen, male monarch, bishop, knight, and castle. Note that the Queenss start of squares of their ain colour, with a dark square in each participant? s left manus corner.
Alternately, the participants make a move, get downing with the white participant ( the participant that plays with the white pieces. ) A move consists of traveling one of the pieces of the participant to a different square, following the regulations of motion for that piece. A participant can take a piece of the opposition by traveling one of his ain pieces to the square that contains a piece of the opposition. The opposition? s piece so is removed from the board, and out of drama for the remainder of the game.
The castle moves in a consecutive line, horizontally or vertically. The castle may non leap over other pieces, that is: all squares between the square where the castle starts its move and where the castle ends its move must be empty. The bishop moves in a consecutive diagonal line. The bishop may besides non leap over other pieces. The queen has the combined moves of the castle and the bishop, the queen may travel in any consecutive line, horizontal, perpendicular, or diagonal.
The knight makes a move that consists of first one measure in a horizontal or perpendicular way, and so one measure diagonally. The knight leaps: it is allowed that the first square that the knight passes over is occupied by an arbitrary piece. For case, white can get down the game by traveling his knight from b1 to c3. The knight does farther non impact the piece that is jumped over: as usual, a knight takes a piece of the opposition by traveling to the square that contains that piece.
The pawn moves otherwise sing whether it moves to an empty square or whether it takes a piece of the opposition. When a pawn does non take, it moves one square straightforward. When this pawn has non moved at all, i.e. , the pawn is still at the 2nd row ( from the having participants position ) , the pawn may do a dual measure straightforward. For case, a white pawn on d2 can be moved to d4. When taking, the pawn goes one square diagonally frontward. Pawns that reach the last row of the board promote. When a participant moves a pawn to the last row of the board, he replaces the pawn by a queen, castle, knight, or bishop ( of the same colour ) . Normally, participants will advance the pawn to a queen, but the other types of pieces are besides allowed.
The male monarch moves one square in any way, horizontally, vertically, or diagonal
ly. There is one particular type of move, made by a male monarch and castle at the same time, called castle. The male monarch is the most of import piece of the game, and moves must be made in such a manner that the male monarch is ne’er in cheque: Under certain, particular regulations, a male monarch and castle can travel at the same time in a castle move. The undermentioned conditions must be met:
? The male monarch that makes the castling move has non yet moved in the game.
? The castle that makes the castling move has non yet moved in the game.
? The male monarch is non in cheque.
? The male monarch does non travel over a square that is attacked by an enemy piece during the castling move.
? The male monarch does non travel to a square that is attacked by an enemy piece during the castling move.
? All squares between the castle and male monarch before the castle move are empty.
When castle, the king moves two squares towards the castle, and the castle moves over the male monarch to the following square, i.e. , white & # 8217 ; s king on e1 and castle on a1 move to: male monarch c1, castle d1 ( long castle ) , white & # 8217 ; s king on e1 and castle on h1 move to: male monarch g1, castle f1 ( short castle ) , and similar for black.
When the male monarch of a participant can be taken by a piece of the opposition, one says that the male monarch is in cheque. For case, the white participant moves his castle to a place such that it attacks the black male monarch, i.e. , if black doesn & # 8217 ; t make anything about it, the castle could take the black male monarch in the following move: we say that the white castle gives cheque. It is considered good manners to state cheque when one checks 1s opposition.
It is non allowed to do a move ; such that 1s king is in cheque after the move. If a participant by chance tries to do such a move, he must take the move back and do another move. When a participant is in cheque, and he can non do a move such that after the move, the male monarch is non in cheque, so he is mated. The participant that is mated lost the game, and the participant that mated him won the game. Note that there are three different possible ways to take a cheque:
1. Travel the male monarch off to a square where he is non in cheque.
2. Take the piece that gives the cheque.
3. ( In instance of a cheque, given by a castle, bishop or queen: ) travel a piece between the look intoing piece and the male monarch.
When a participant can non do any legal move, but he is non in cheque, so the participant is said to be stalemated. In a instance of a deadlock, the game is a draw. A participant can vacate the game, which means that he has lost and his opposition has won. After doing a move, a participant can suggest a draw: his opposition can accept the proposal ( in which instance the game ends and is a draw ) or decline the proposal ( in which instance the game continues ) . If the same place with the same participant to travel is repeated three times in the game, the participant to travel can claim a draw. If there are have been 50 back-to-back moves of white and of black without any piece taken or any pawn moved so a participant can claim a draw.
Frequently, participants play the game with cheat redstem storksbills. These redstem storksbills count the clip that each participant individually takes for doing his ain moves. Extra regulations are so used, stating how many ( perchance all ) moves must be made before a participant has used a certain clip for his moves.
The game of cheat is really interesting and I recommend that everyone attempt it. Chess is a game of concentration, schemes, and tonss of competition.
