The profession that I have is in the field of defense as I am an Army Unit Supply Specialist that is currently working in Iraq. The nature of my work as well as the condition that we are in is often characterized by challenges and numerous important decisions that we have to make everyday. Being the case, we need the necessary guidance that will serve as our basis in the actions and decisions we need to make. In line with this, in order to fully understand the idea of ethics, a comparison and contrast of the codes of ethics of health educators and the military would be discuss in the succeeding paragraphs.
The code of ethics for the health education profession is committed “to excellence in the practice of promoting individual, family, organizational, and community health” (Greenberg, 2001). Health educators have the responsibility in upholding the ethical standard of this profession especially in the challenging decisions that they make everyday. In order to do so, health educators must recognize the diversity in the society by accepting a cross-cultural approach in the performance of their duty. Moreover, health educators should maintain the “worth, dignity, potential, and uniqueness of all people” (Greenberg, 2001).
The Health Education Profession code of ethics provides a framework of shared values that will guide the practice of health education. It is based from fundamental ethical principles that encompass all health care services. These principles are: respect for autonomy, promotion of social justice, active promotion of good as well as avoidance of them. It is the utmost responsibility of each heath educator to aim and uphold the highest standard of conduct and inspire other people they work with to also do the same (Greenberg, 2001).
The military code of ethics gives importance to professionalism wherein their expertise should be use for the good of the society. This is the reason why the most essential value that they adhere to is the protection of the society. In order to do so, military officers also follow value the principles of justice, benevolence, human dignity and autonomy. Health educators and military officers have some similarities when it comes to their code of ethics. Both field of profession give utmost importance and priority in being of service to other people through the respective professions that they have. For health educators, their main goal is to provide the necessary knowledge among the people in the community about different health issues and concerns. In the case of military officers, their objective is to protect and defend the country they stand for and most importantly the people within it. It is their duty to do all the necessary steps in order to prevent and fight anybody who threatens the country and its people security.
The variations of these two codes of ethics tend to vary due to the differences in the nature of these professions. For health educators, the ethical principles that they lived by are grounded in the idea of saving lives. Ethical behaviours should be observed in order to make sound decisions that would protect the lives of other people. On the other hand, military officers also give importance to the security of other people especially the ones that they protect. However, they could result to means that are detrimental to those they considered as enemies. Military officers could result to hurting other people so that they can protect the ideals and principles of the country and people that they serve.
