CHAPTER 1 INTRODUCTION The 1988 local election paved the way to the creation and establishment of Colegio de San Lorenzo Ruiz de Manila. Dr. Gilda Figueroa-Carpio ran in 1988 for Mayor in the Municipality of Catarman, Northern Samar. Unfortunately, her efforts and charm was not enough in order to win the mayoralty position.. Nonetheless, it was also the time that she saw the sufferings and sad plight of her fellow Catarmananons, especially in the delivery of basic health services in the far-flung barangays of Catarman and the rest of Northern Samar.
Her electoral defeat and sad experience was her big challenge, thus, Dr. Gilda F. Carpio did not make her time fruitless and idle. She made a complete turnaround of her dreams and priorities for public service, from politics to academe. With the help of her beloved husband who is likewise a doctor in profession, Dr. Rolando Recibe Carpio, a native of Aklan, they founded the San Lorenzo Ruiz de Manila School of Midwifery on September 28, 1990, a non-stock, non-profit private educational institution.
The school was named after the first Filipino Saint, San Lorenzo Ruiz de Manila. It was Dr.
Rolando Carpio who was chosen the name to honor San Lorenzo whom he believed was instrumental in the recovery of his sister from stage IV cervical cancer. Like any other business or profession it was not made easy for the couple, especially the establishment of the building and facilities, but because of their persistence and desire to establish and start the operation of the school, they decided to sacrifice their own residential house in Barangay Calachuchi, Catarman, Northern Samar and converted it into a two room school. The first initial enrollment consisted of 78 midwifery students.
A woman of vision and determination, Dr. Gilda Figueroa-Carpio did not stop in the mere offering of midwifery course. Under her directorship she took the pride and courage to offer the Nursing course and Elementary course in 1993 and eventually the Medical Technology course in 1994. Likewise in 1997, three (3) courses were offered, namely: Bachelor in Elementary Education (BEED), Bachelor of Science in Commerce (BSC) and Bachelor of Arts (AB) Major in political Science. Eventually, the name of the School was changed from San Lorenzo Ruiz De Manila (CSLRM) to cater the new courses offered.
In 1991 Dr. Rolando R. Carpio and Dr. Gilda F. Carpio constructed a three-story building at the back of their family house in order to accommodate the increasing population of the school. The sprawling garden was converted into a lobby of the school. A new lot was acquired for the new school and elementary department has been housed. In 1994 a new laboratory building was constructed for nursing and medical technology students. Up to the present construction is still going on especially with the offering of TESDA Courses, which started in 1998.
What the school has achieved from 1990 to the present is quite enough but for the school Officials and staff it is only the beginning towards the fulfillment of a dream for academic excellence and its continued effort of upgrading the faculty, research and its physical facilities. CONTEXT OF THE STUDY CSLRM had proven enough, population of the students had blown up from hundred to thousand. Thus decelerate on some old system of CSLRM are starting to be noticed, because most likely it is not equipped to operate on a last number of student. Indeed a room for an upgrade to this old system is highly necessity.
One of the possible upgrade that CSLRM could consider are on the field of their grading system, because at present CLSRM still utilized the annual grading system at registrar office. Registrar takes the responsibility of holding the grades of the students a week after the final examination; the grades submitted by every Instructor will be compiled and kept by the registrar for student’s inquiry/getting of grades. Some cited problems by his manual grading system are, when getting grades, registrar personnel have to scan the compiled file in order to track down the particular grade of the student in his/her particular subject.
Then for another grade the personnel has to redo the action (and for the record, regular student has 7 to 8 subjects). Hence, it is tiring and frustrating for a registrar personnel to do the tracking of grades for 7 to 8 times. Likewise it’s time consuming and student has to extend his patience in getting grades. Truly manual grading system fails the practice of efficiency. Furthermore, try to image the scenario of 10 to 50 students’ in line to get their grades? It could take a whole day.
Perhaps the capacity of a student that the registrar could only accommodate per day is 20-50 student’s which is few compared if CSLRM will utilized this system the “COMPUTIRIZED GRADING SYSTEM WITH SMS INQUIRY CAPABILITY”. Today, computer has been recognized because of their multi-use. These are essential tools used in almost every field of endeavor for they are capable of accepting information, processing and providing result of the process in various automatic electronic devices and keep data according to a prescribed sequence of their own work by using a control routine called party check.
The computer functionality could be enhance further by the use of various program and could do a significant task such as our system “ COMPUTIRIZED GRADING SYSTEM WITH SMS INQUIRY CAPABILITY” that will run using ms access as the database that will hold the record/grades of the student’s. Then it will be connected to another program called VB. net admin will able to access and manipulate records of the student’s by adding, updating, deleting and searching.
Plus a gadget “SMART BROADBAND” that will serve as a modem in order for the system to received SMS grade Inquiry and likewise send the corresponding automatically to the sender. STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM The study aims to develop a Computer-Based Grading System for the Colegio de San Loenzo Ruiz de Manila, for CSLRM still utilized the manual grading system that makes delay and issuance of grades. Specifically, the study seeks to answer the following: * How Computer-based Grading System done at the Colegio de San Lorenzo Ruiz de Manila? What are the problems encountered by the students and teachers in the current Grading System? * What design of a Computer-Based Grading System may be proposed? * What are the chances that a Computer-Based Grading System may be implemented? * How to secure the records of the student? * How student can have access to their grades without inquiring personally at registrar office. OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY The primary purpose of this study is to develop a Computerized Grading System with SMS inquiry Capability for the CSLRM and to achieve the following: To develop a system that will replace the current Grading System in the CSLRM which is highly manual; * To eliminate lag time between the submission of grades by subject teacher and the department head to the registrar, thus preventing a delay in submission and issuance of grades; * To create a user friendly Grading System that will use a database that stores all the information about the students; and * To have a localized Grading System that can be used by the faculty, department head, registrar’s personnel and trusted staff. To secure the records of the student. * To add additional features that the students can have access to their grades through SMS inquiry capability. SCOPE AND LIMITATION OF THE STUDY The main scope of the study is to develop a computerized grading System of CSLRM that can eliminate lag time between the submission of grades by subject teacher and the department head to the registrar, thus preventing a delay in submission and issuance of grades, likewise organized file, save file for a long time.
The Computer-Based Grading System with SMS Inquiry Capability offers more than just a class card function, encoding of students’ personal data and issuance of summary grading sheets which include the grades of the students plus an additional feature SMS inquiry Capacity. The system will lessen the work especially of those within the registrar’s office because the grades will be stored directly into a database. Users from the department would be able to access information they will need anytime.
This grading system is exclusively designed for the faculty members, registrar’s personnel and trusted staff of the University. It is off limits to the students, meaning students are not given the privilege to find out their grades before their actual clearance start. The developers designed this window-based application system in a user friendly manner. The researchers used VB. net for the programming language and Microsoft Access for Database Management System. The scope of this study is up to implementation only.
SIGNIFICANCE OF STUDY Computerized pattern grading makes the grading process fast, more consistent, and more reliable than traditional manual grading system. It will help on the development and progress of Colegio de San Lorenzo Ruiz de Manila Catarman and specially will boost the function of registrar. The success of this study has great importance to the following: * To the Faculty. This will save the faculty effort and will lessen the time of collecting grades and recording them in grade sheets. * To the Students.
This will help lessen the late issuance of grades that can affect the students in many ways including approval of scholarships, delay of graduation and others. Student’s retrieval of records can easily be accessed. * To the School. The study will provide an improved method of processing the hundreds of grade reports they print and distribute to their students each quarter. * To the proponents. This will help the proponents to enhance in their analysis in problem solving with regards to information systems. This will also develop the interpersonal communication to other people.
And most of all, the knowledge in programming of the proponents will be utilized throughout the development it this study. * Future Researchers. Future researchers who will conduct studies will realize that the traditional grade reporting process can be enhanced from manual processing to an computerized paperless system. MOTIVATION The proponents conduct this study in application to their skills and knowledge gained from their years of schooling. This is one of their partial fulfillment of the requirements for Bachelor of Science in Computer Science in Colegio de San Lorenzo Ruiz de Manila. Inc.
The researchers were inspired to develop Computerized Grading System of Colegio de San Lorenzo Ruiz de Manila Catarman to help registrar personnel easily facilitates their work. This study aims to develop Computerized Grading System that will obtain record/grades of students in CSLRM, thus it will secure the record and eliminate the delay of operation in issuing the grades of the student to have an easy, efficient and effective process. The CSLRM at present which is currently utilizing the manual process will have an idea to implement a Computerized Grading System with SMS Inquiry Capability.
