In rural areas women have a positive attitude towards initiation of breast feeding and according to study all women continue breast feed beyond 9 months
Breast feeding ought to be initiated at 30 mins-1 hour when delivery and if delayed there’s delay within the development of oxytocin reflex that helps in contraction of womb and breast milk.. In our study the sooner and simpler consolidation of the method,there’s more robust impact on when birth amount that helps in earlier secetion of breast milk..
Colostrums have plenty of minerals, immunoglobulins, vitamins that protect the child from infection. Pre lacteal feed such as honey and sugar water and discarding of the colostrums is still practiced and leads to infection of the child.
A descriptive cross sectional study by K MADHU , SRIRAM CHAUDHARY , RAMESH MASTHI (2009) on breast feeding practices and newborn care in rural areas (Telangana) showed that the bulk of mother are between the ages 21-25 years (60%) and 15-20 years old (30%) . 52 % of the mothers were illiterate and 55%belong to low socioeconomic class. 65% of the mothers were primi gravida and in 69%the age at marriage 15-20 years At the time of wedding 11% of the mother were less than 15 years old. Mothers who were employed were 22% and 69% were housewife. 97% initiated breast feeding and 3 % were not able to initiate due to separation from the mother and 1% as they were told by their mother in laws.
44% initiated breast feeding within 30 minutes from home deliveries and 38% with C-section. 19% of the mother didn’t breastfeed even after 24 hours. 13% of the babies were fed with sugar water alone for more than 48 hours. 90% of the deliveries were hospital deliveries and 10% were home deliveries. The care provided by the home deliveries were untrained birth attendant (40%).50% used household knives to cut the umbilical cord in 5 home deliveries. In 67% hospital and home deliveries nothing was applied for umbilical cord dressing. 10 % used Talcum powder and turmeric by some mother for cord dressing. 16% of the mother still practice branding of the child for illness. Majority of the children received vaccination needed according to national immunization schedule(93%).
In our study 50% of the mothers are between 26-33 years and 40% are between 18-25 years. Above 35% were illiterate and belong to socio economic class. 61% were primigravida.10% were less than 18 years old at the time of marriage.
50% of the mothers initiated breastfeeding within 30 minutes. All the mothers breastfeeded after delivery within 24 hours. 82% were given colostrums and 22% were given pre lacteal feeds
In our study 80 % were hospital deliveries and 20 % are home deliveries. In home deliveries 92.5% care was provided by trained dais and 7.5 by untrained dais. In about 67% umbilical cord dressing nothong was applied in both Hospital and Home. Spirit swab 17% and talcum powder 11% was used by some mothers for cord dressings. 93% of children received BCG, OPV1 and DPT1 vaccination according to National Immunization Schedule.
