Division and Classification Essay
Division and Classification Essay A championship football team consists of many key components - Division and Classification Essay introduction. There is no one thing, or one player, that can make or break a team’s success. If properly combined, all of these components can form an unstoppable unit. Although there is no one player alone that can cause a football team to be successful, the quarterback may be the most important and influential of all. A quarterback is the leader, the captain, and the general of a football team both on and off the field. He commands the offense on a play-to-play basis, given that he has the ball in his hands play after play.
They get all of the glory, along with all of the blame. Take the Indianapolis Colts for example; they were one of the most consistent teams in the NFL. They made appearances in the playoffs year after year and even won a Super Bowl with their star quarterback Peyton Manning leading the way. However, their star quarterback underwent neck surgery early this year and has been unable to play. Without him leading the helm, the Indianapolis Colts have not won a game this season, going 0-8. This should provide an example to all of how important a quarterback is to a team.

However important a quarterback is, he would be able to do next to nothing with giant defensive lineman in his face every play. This is where the offensive linemen come in. They are big, burly men with an unnatural ability to push people around. The offensive lineman’s main priorities are to protect the quarterback at all costs and to open up holes for the running back to run through. Good offensive linemen are a must for any offense that hopes to move the ball efficiently. The workhorse for all offenses is the running back.
He must put his heart into every play, whether he is carrying the ball, running a pass route, or pass blocking for the quarterback. A good running back is deadly. He will get nearly 30 carries a game and account for a great chunk of the offense’s production. Establishing a good running game will open up the rest of the offense. Wide receivers are the playmakers of the offense. When a big play happens, a wide receiver is usually involved. This, more often than not, causes them to have huge egos. However, they back these egos up most of the time. Wide receivers’ playmaking abilities excite and wow the crowd.
They must be fast to be able to get open by outrunning the defenders. They also must be able to jump high to catch balls thrown overtop of defenders. It is these skills that give way to receivers’ ability to make huge plays. The middle linebacker is the captain of the defensive side of the ball. He recognizes opponent’s offenses and changes the defense accordingly. He is the field general that puts everyone in the right positions to make plays. On top of his leadership abilities, he is a quite impressive physical specimen. A typical middle linebacker in the NFL is about 6’2” and 250 pounds while running a 4.
6 second 40-yard dash. He has the ability to come up and pound a running back or drop back and cover a receiver. Along with his outside linebackers, the middle linebacker is a forced to be reckoned with. Along with the linebackers, defensive linemen’s primary purpose is to stop the run. In order to battle big offensive lineman down in the trenches, defensive lineman must also be big and strong. They need to be able to push offensive linemen out of the way to plug up a running lane. However, they must also be quick to rush the passer. Defensive linemen can turn the tides of games by putting fear into the quarterback.
The cornerstone players to defend against the pass are cornerbacks. Cornerbacks are some of the fastest and most athletic players on the field. They must be in order to cover arguably the most explosive players, wide receivers. Because of these attributes, they also make great kick and punt returners. The last line of defense is the safeties. They are the leaders of the secondary. They must read the formation and adjust the coverage accordingly. A safety must have a great knowledge of the game along with outstanding instincts. Safeties must have the ability to defend against the pass, but also come up and stop the run.
Because of this, they must be fast as well as strong. Once a safety is beat, the defense has lost. The binding component of this mass of players is the head coach. He must be able to recognize and assess players’ abilities in order to field the best team possible with the greatest chance of winning. The head coach is the one that coordinates the team and puts everyone into a position to make a play. Hiring a good head coach can be a determining factor in a team’s successes. I can even turn around a poor team. Take Brady Hoke for example; San Diego State Aztecs boasted a 2-10 record the year prior to his takeover.
In his second year, the Aztecs compiled a 9-4 record ending with a win in the Poinsettia Bowl. He is also involved in the University of Michigan’s current turnaround. Along with the quarterback, the head coach of a football team gets all of the glory during good times and all of the blame during tough times. A championship caliber football team requires all of its parts to work together in unison. If any of these parts fails, the whole is likely to fail. It must run like a highly efficient, well-oiled machine: using all of its parts together to work toward its function of winning a championship.
