I chose to write my paper on the movie musical “Mamma Mia!” An adaption of the Broadway musical written by Catherine Johnson based on songs written by the Swedish rock group ABBA. The title of the play is based off ABBA’s 1975 chart topping hit “Mamma Mia”. The musical tells the story of a young girl who longs to know who her father is before she marries so her father can walk her down the aisle on her wedding day.
The musical “Mamma Mia!” revives the retro music by ABBA from the 70’s for a new generation to hear. The way the musical is arrange it is geared more towards woman and teenage girls. The free spirited feel of the songs draws you in as the cast of characters sing you a story. The musical is fast paced and full of energy with of songs that make you want to jump up and dance sing. The songs are used to describe many of the characters current situations in the movie. The music is very high pitched and you can feel their emotions as they sing the song. There are many different layers of sound as the characters voices blend together and flow in harmony, having an overall whimsical feeling. I was surprised at how well the actress’s and actors were able to sing the songs considering I have only seen most in sitcoms or movies.
The musical made me reminisce of when I was a kid and I would dance and sing these songs with my mother and aunts. I also want to be whisked away to a Greek island. Over all I found the movie and music very refreshing and would recommend to watch the musical and listen to more ABBA.
