“Not Gon Cry” is a 1995/1996 single by American R&B singer Mary J. Blige, the song is featured on Blige’s 1997 album, Share My World. This song was written and produce by Babyface.
‘Not Gon Cry’ is fundamentally experienced aurally, through sound. What really catch my sense on this song is this versus “Eleven years, of sacrifice/And you can leave me at the drop of a dime/Swallowed my fears/Stood by your side/I should have left your behind a thousand times”. This is catchy to me because, sometimes us women think that the man we love would change and they will become the man we want them to become & unfortunately this is not always the case.
The fundamental reason for this music is to empower women, to walk her own listeners through paths to their own recovery and to teach them to love themselves, however I also think this song was written to procure money for the artist included and the recording label. This song was successful because it became major hit for Blige in the US, where it peaked at number one and two on the Billboard’s R&B Singles and Hot 100 charts respectively. The single sold 900,000 copies domestically and was certified platinum by the RIAA.
“Not Gon Cry” is part of the R&B music and has become very popular for not only man but for woman too. Based on what I read about this song, Blige wrote this song from the perspective of a woman fighting for her marriage. And then she ended up, without knowing it, getting a divorce. I strongly believe this song have a very important message specially for woman, and that message is that “we need to value ourselves and learn to say ENOUGH and that no matter where we want to go in life there’s always something for her. In other words, she’s empowering women.
The song lyrics “Not Gon Cry” by Mary J. Blige was written base on a story line in the movie “Waiting to Exhale” directed by Wayne Maser and Elizabeth Bailey. which is based on a woman who gets abandoned by her philandering husband meaning by the time Mary recorded this song it was not about her, literally did she know she was later getting divorced. This music has impacted a lot of people because she sang this song to help people heal from a heart break.
What was going through Blige mind when she decided to write this song?
Why was the movie “Waiting to Exhale” so inspiring to Blige?
Why did Blige decided to name the song “Not Gon Cry” instead of a different name?
Can someone be impacted by the song lyrics even if they are not going through a heart break?
I would do research on the artifact I chose, go to the library and get some book if needed and Use the bibliographies and sources in everything I read to find additional sources of information.
