Our group is researching information on if evolution should be taught in schools. In this situation people have many biased opinions to it. Majority of the of the people interviewed believed in creationism due to their religion and the rest are strong believers of evolution. Scientist mainly, there are many ways to view to view this topic based how a person lives their life and the environment that there in that determines the way that they think. Most people believe in creationism because they are scared to be judged if they don’t. This causes more and more people to choose something that they really don’t believe in which is not fair because people should be entitled to their own opinion without being judged.
Looking at this from an ethical lens requires the opinion of many people. There are many opinions that comes from the question ‘Should evolution be taught in schools. The debate over science versus creationism is in part affected by the notion that everybody’s opinions and beliefs are equally valid. Many people strongly disagree with creationism. For example,” in addition to the points you raise, I’d add the fact that time wasted teaching the “nonsense” of creationism is time that could be spent teaching real science” this statement was made by someone who believes in evolution in the article “The Cons of creationism” by ivan k.schuller. An ethical lens, about this topic is very dense topic to talk about since there is no right or wrong answer. This being a opinionated topic makes reaching every point of view hard. Evolution should not be taught in public schools because the majority does not want to learn it. One of the main reasons why evolution should not be taught in public schools is because an obvious majority of the United States practices the religion of Christianity. The status of creation and evolution in public education has been the subject of substantial debate and conflict in legal, political, and religious circles. Globally, there is a wide variety of views on the topic. Most western countries have legislation that mandates only evolutionary biology is to be taught in the appropriate scientific syllabuses. Most people believe in creationism based off the background of the country’s belief in religion and what is stands for. That doesn’t mean that it is true it means that some Americans don’t get a chance to explore their own beliefs or question their religion thinking that when death comes upon them that they will go to hell.
“In American schools, the Genesis creation narrative was generally taught as the origin of the universe and of life until Darwin’s scientific theories became widely accepted in the late 1800s. While there was some immediate backlash, organized opposition did not get underway until the Fundamentalist–Modernist Controversy broke out following World War I; several states passed laws banning the teaching of evolution while others debated them but did not pass them. The Scopes Trial was the result of a challenge to the law in Tennessee. Scopes lost his case, and further states passed laws banning the teaching of evolution.” “In 1968, the US Supreme Court ruled on Epperson v. Arkansas, another challenge to these laws, and the court ruled that allowing the teaching of creation, while disallowing the teaching of evolution, advanced a religion, and therefore violated the Establishment Clause of the constitution.
Creationists then starting lobbying to have laws passed that required teachers to Teach the Controversy, but this was also struck down by the Supreme Court in 1987 in Edwards v. Aguillard. Creationists then moved to frame the issue as one of intelligent design but this too was ruled against in a District Court in Kitzmiller v. Dover Area School District in 2005.” These pieces of information were given by researcher’s that looked farther into why most Americans believe in creationism and its not because their scared to think otherwise but because that’s what they are being taught in school based on the school board and government officials. Questioning religion causes people to do bad things thinking when they die there are no consequences and then the country falls apart but by putting these beliefs in children’s head, they are keeping America stable.
