Should We Legalize Euthanasia to a Person Who Is in a Vegetative State?

Table of Content

Should we legalize euthanasia to a person who is in a vegetative state? Many people in many countries are suffering for no reason at the end of their lives. They cannot die even though they want themselves to be killed painlessly in the situation that they will never get better. Euthanasia is the practice of terminating the life of a person or animal in a painless or minimally painful way, usually by lethal injection. Euthanasia is a controversial issue in these days because of conflicting moral feeling for individuals, different cultures, ethnicities, religions and other groups.

Some people think that it’s the best for patients who are going through endless pain. Others think that the process is murder. However, Euthanasia has more positive aspects than negative ones, so at least euthanasia to a person who is in a vegetative state should be legalized all over the world. Some people say that Euthanasia would threaten individual’s right in that it could result in abuse by mentally unstable patients or misused for murder. Euthanasia should be prohibited in any circumstances because it is not ethical, not constitutional, and possibly misused for the purpose of murder and suicide.

First, Euthanasia is taking away someone’s life. Taking away another’s life is wrong, even if the other person wants it. Just like death penalty, a human shouldn’t kill anyone for any reason. If they do it then it can be murder. Although the patient’s family asks to do it, it could be murder. They wouldn’t be able to know what he wants to do because they are patients in a vegetative state. Still, lots of doctors just kill them under the family’s permission. What if he didn’t want to die or he had something he wanted to do?

That would be ignoring the patient’s rights to choose by themselves, which goes against the Law of Human Rights. Second, there are always chances that the patient who is in a vegetative state can get over the disease. Maybe the patient can get lucky, or there is miracle. Maybe a new cure could be made and save the patient. Anything can happen. For example of miracle, there was the person who was recovered from Persistent Vegetative State. Her name was Carrie Coons. She was diagnosed that she could not be recovered again, but she did wonders.

Third, the basic and noble duty of doctors is to protect the patient’s life and cure them. If the doctors ignore about this and cause the patient to die, the doctors might feel insensibility about the dignity of life. In addition, the entire society will be changed to be natural characteristics that belittle the life of human. Even though the patients who are in a vegetative state, the attitude of human respect has to be applied to them. If it is neglected, and if Euthanasia is accepted, it is the obvious fact that numerous immoral things will occur.

Others say that dying is better than living which has pain more than dying like the person who is in a vegetative state. In this case, giving Euthanasia is proper method above all. Even if extreme Euthanasia could be a problem, we must remember that we have the dignity and the right to die as well. Euthanasia should be legalized because it is good for patients and their family. First and foremost, Euthanasia releases the unbearable amount of pain that the ill has to suffer. Although the person who is in a vegetative state cannot feel the pain, ling down is painful.

Have you ever imagined how bad the sick would have suffered to choose death over it? Also, death with dignity will be better than living in pain, watching your family go through adversities and ending up dying in a strange place with a piece of contraption forcing you to stay alive. Sadly, most governments fail to find this clear and avoid this subject since it is sensitive amongst people and might lose votes in elections and this is where the Christian society comes in. The Christian society disapproves any kind of unnatural death including euthanasia.

The next reason is because allowing euthanasia will stop doctors and hospitals from extorting money from the helpless patient’s family. The patient’s painful disease or illness must not go away if he/she has considered euthanasia as an option. However, the legal system won’t allow him/ her to die in peace and they will be kept alive in pain with tons of money getting wasted. Finally, have you ever heard of hope tortures? This may sound not so bad when you hear it but it probably is one of the worst things ever.

Basically, in this “torture of hope” you keep hoping for something impossible, which in this case, is the recovery of their member of family. As if this wasn’t bad enough, they will waste their time in despair. I disagree to some people who say that Euthanasia would threaten individual’s right in that it could result in abuse by mentally unstable patients or misused for murder. First, we cannot assure that Euthanasia is murder. Human has the right to live as human, and the right to live as human includes the right of happiness. Also, we can avoid the pain because we have the basic right.

As long as the patient is living, he and his family have to suffer. Second, they go through the pain that is not by choosing but by some accidents or illness. If they were the patient who is in a vegetative state, it thins to have probability. There is no miracle, and believing miracle is very silly thinking. It is same as winning the lottery in your life. Therefore, we should give to them about choosing of their lives. Third, this is right that the basic and noble duty of doctors is to protect the patient’s life and cure them.

However, it is too large jump that the entire society will be changed to be natural characteristics that belittle the life of human because I am arguing about Euthanasia just to a person who is in a vegetative state. Do you think those patients should suffer horribly at the last days of life? Maybe, the answer is NO. This should be stopped and euthanasia should be legalized in all countries. First of all, for many people, euthanasia should be an option that they can choose to end their superfluous suffering period.

It is a terrible crime to make people who do not wish to continue their lives to live. Suppose that you were the patient who is in a vegetative state, would you like to live with the pain coming over you and getting worse and worse? Most of the people’s answer will be NO because they do not want to receive unnecessary treatments only for maintaining or lengthening their lives. If your doctor tells you that you have no choice but to prepare for death, then you will undoubtedly want to die right away rather than waiting for a painful death.

However, you cannot die as you wish because it is illegal. Such situations are common in most hospitals for the patients who want euthanasia. Therefore, I agree to do Euthanasia to a person who is in a vegetative state. In conclusion, Euthanasia is most dignified way of dying, and when performing euthanasia, doctor painlessly kills the patient, with incurable and painful disease, with his family’s permission, and when the patient can’t be recovered anymore, it is doctor’s duty to perform anything, including euthanasia if patient’s family asks for it, to release the patient from the pain.
