The comparisons that were given between the debates on Slavery and Abortion boasted similarities that apparently gripped on a human being’s rights, born or unborn. The basic comparison between the two revolved around the other party’s rights. Four initial comparisons were given in the article that established a firm relation between the two topics of debate that seemingly divide the congress and society into two major groups. Even if the article also showed the differences between the two, in terms of the other groups’ ability to raise the concern to argue for their rights, the article managed to establish an unbreakable connection between the two mentioned concerns.
Personally, I do not think that the abortion of human life could be compared to the slavery of human life. Abortion can be equated to murder (execution) as it permits the killing of a live human, even though unborn. Slavery, however, is quite similar to a life imprisonment, unless a parole was given. It seems that the severity of abortion is far heavier than that of slavery. Hence, it cannot be compared to each other, as what the article would suggest. However, the article was able to establish a connection, in terms of the two concerns’ constructs or ideas in relation to human rights.
The debate on Abortion may cause another civil war, although it does not necessarily have to be a violent one, just like the previous one which was created by the disagreement on Slavery between two groups. The question here is, “Is abortion really that bad?” Yes, it may entail the fact that it takes away human life but as opposed to slavery, these “humans” are still unconscious of their humanity. Hence, it could be proved that they are not yet humans, as opposed to what anti-abortion groups may assume. It could also be proved that Slavery may have been more devastating to human life than Abortion.
