Summary

In Kenneth Oppel’s Airborn, Matt Cruse, a cabin boy on a luxurious airship, meets a dying balloonist who speaks of mysterious creatures living in the skies. After the ship is raided by pirates and crash-lands on an island, Matt and Kate, the granddaughter of the balloonist, discover these creatures and find themselves in a dangerous situation with the pirates. The two characters, who eventually fall in love, work together to escape and bring the creature’s skeleton to a museum. The book contains adventure, romance, mystery, and suspense, but the length may be overwhelming for some readers. Overall, the book is recommended for those who enjoy a thrilling story with vivid descriptions.

Table of Content

Matt Cruse is a cabin boy on the Aurora, a huge airship that sails hundreds of feet above the ocean, ferrying wealthy passengers from city to city. It is the life Matt’s always wanted; convinced he’s lighter than air, he imagines himself as buoyant as the hydrium gas that powers his ship. One night he meets a dying balloonist who speaks of beautiful creatures drifting through the skies. It is only after Matt meets the balloonist’s granddaughter that he realizes that the man’s ravings may, in fact, have been true, and that the creatures are completely real and utterly mysterious.

One night pirates raided the ship. They rob the ship and leave it crippled, leaving the crew of the Aurora no choice but to crash on a nearby island which Matt and Kate discover to be the home of the creatures Kate’s grandfather saw. Matt and Kate both go onto the island to look around and one of those creatures is exactly what they see. They find it in a tree it looks like a bats relative. They then head back to the ship where Kate’s chaperone was franticly looking for her. They go back on to the boat and when the boat is being fixed Kate and Matt go back to get the skeleton and then discover a pirate camp.

The pirates did not recognize them so they stayed in the camp and Kate used her pants to blow them up and escape. When they got back from their adventure they put the skeleton in a museum. In the end Kate’s grandfather was right and Matt found his soul mate. The conflict of this story is that Matt and Kate get stuck on this island where they are trying to find these creatures Kate’s grandfather told Matt about. The rising action that leads to the climax is Matt saves a an old man who happens to be one of the passengers grandfathers who ends up dying and tells matt about these amazing creatures he’s seen.

The climax is when they find the creatures on the island and get stuck in a pirate camp. The resolution is when they escape and bring the skeleton of the creature to a museum. Characters: The characters in this story are Matt Cruse who is a fifteen year old boy, who works on an airship named the Aurora. He is my favorite character in the book because he is brave and loves adventure. At the same time he knows his limits and what to be careful of. The other character in this book is Kate. Kate is a girl around the same age as Matt. Kate is also very brave and takes a lot of risks.

Kate also has a kind and sweet heart. The two characters mesh well together and eventually form a romantic bond between them. Recommendation: I liked this book a lot, it had adventure, romance, mystery, and suspense which is what makes it interesting. The book had two sides one I liked the other I was bored by. It was a good story but I wish the author would have shortened it a tiny bit. The author did however used good sensory details to describe things and make me feel like I was actually looking at the item. Although the book was good because it was so long I would not recommend it to a friend.
