“In 1953, a polio epidemic struck my suburb of DeWitt, NY In our first-grade classroom of twenty-four children, 8 children contracted the disease. My twin brother, Frankie, died.” These are the words of a polio survivor who lost her brother Frankie because of Polio at a young age in the 50s, Medical research involving animals has dramatically improved the health of the human race. “Without animal testing, the cure for Polio would not even exist” Perhaps if animal testing would have started earlier Frankie could have been saved Many people claim that animal experimentation is wrong but is it? If not animals then who? Humans? Contrary to the opposition offered by animal rights advocates the use of animals for biomedical research is needed in order to seek advances in human health.
Not only has animal testing helped find “cures for diseases like Polio, Measles, and Rabies it has also broadened our understanding and has made it possible for us to perform organ transplants”. Don‘t get me wrong I love animals, but sometimes the “outcome justifies the means” (Machiavelli) Animal testing is not necessary and leads to the suffering and death of millions of animals. There is no denying that some people go about their experimenting in cruel manners; instead ofjust shutting down all experimentation on animals why not just try to shut down the inhumane groups “Almost every advance in medical research has resulted in a longer life span and has been based on animal research” after hearing that quote it is just absolutely crazy to even think to shut down animal testing.
It is insane not to allow animal testing The most recent and extensive poll “showed that 94% of the public accepted the use of animals in research”. “Animal rights advocates claim that we don’t necessarily need new tests because we already have large amounts of knowledge”. However, “many new deadly infections surface every year” and new treatments and drugs are needed to fight these deadly plagues. Overall with animal experimentation we would be left with no cures for many illnesses, no transplants, and a lower life span of humans. Those are three key things to human life. Testing can and will be done in a humane manner and animal rights advocates will just have to learn to accept that.
