ESSAY In the novel of Mice and Men, written by John Steinbeck, a lot of themes are shown for example: friendship, sacrifice, loneliness and insecurities. These themes are exactly the ones for the scene of Candy and His dog. Candy is an old man, lonely and insecure man just like his old dog. They rely a lot on each other. They only have each other and it has been that way for a long time but it will change through progress. The death of Candy’s dog is symbolic for Lennie’s. The dog was Candy’s best friend and Lennie was Georges’ best friend.
In both of these cases, they relied to each other and didn’t care about what people said. For instance, Candy’s dog is old and is disliked by everyone, but Candy doesn’t care. ‘’Carlson says: god awmighty, that dog stinks. ’’ And Candy doesn’t care what they all say for example: ‘’ Well hell! I had him for so long. Had him since he was a pup. I herded sheep with him… he was the best damn sheep dog I ever seen. ’’ This is the same way George would stand up for Lennie: ‘’ … but he’s sure a hell of a good worker. Strong as a bull. ’ Both friendships have an influence on killing one of there best friend. Just like Carlson kept on trying to influence Candy to let him kill his dog (weakest person). For example: ‘’ Look Candy. This ol’ dog jus’ suffers hisself all the time. If you was to take him out and shoot him right in the back of the head… right there, why he’d never know what hit him. ’’ Carlson also influenced a bit George to kill Lennie himself. For example: Carlson: ‘’ I’ll get my Luger. ’’ He wanted to kill Lennie (the weakest person at the moment) himself but George took the responsibility to him his self.
Candy and George both sacrificed themselves to the only person than meant so much for them for the better or worst. The death of the dog foreshadows Lennie’s death knowing that they were both shot on the back of the head and completely unaware of the situation that was coming. For example: Carlson: ‘’… right in the back of the head. ’’ And for Lennie’s case: ‘’ George raised the gun and steadied it, and he brought the muzzle of it close to the back of Lennie’s head. ’’ George killed his own friend to make him die happy and calm knowing that everything would be lright before dying. He didn’t want him to suffer badly. Candy authorized Carlson do it but it didn’t change the fact of not knowing what was going to happen. Candy got influenced to let his dog get killed and he just gave up. Candy relied so much on his dog because he realized that his fate was put on the dog. After that his dog would get old, Candy would be useless knowing that his dog is for no use anymore. Candy would not be treated differently than his dog because they are both old. Candy gave up by not standing for his dog because he can’t stand up for himself.
Both of these deaths kind of foreshadow the death of Curley’s wife. The back of her head got busted too. They are a lot of deaths by the back of the head. Both of the friendships have an animal presence. Lennie is a big baby and acts like he is three. His strength is very big but he acts like a child. Just like a dog would be. In Candy’s relationship there is a dog. This dog is not useful anymore because he is old and it also bothers people because he stinks. So Carlson goes after the dog (with an authorization) and kills him and it is the best thing for everyone because it caused people problems.
Candy authorized Carlson to do kill it because it was maybe time to kill him after all those years. It is the same for Lennie. After when Lennie killed Curley’s wife, he hid himself to not get in trouble. The death of Curley’s wife bothered a lot of people so they went after Lennie to kill him. George decided to kill him his elf to make him die happy and unaware but he knew that he caused a lot of trouble and it was the time to do it and let go even if it’s the last thing he would think of doing. We usually go after an ‘’animal’’ to kill it.
Both deaths have similarities. They were both chased in a way to get killed. The friendships are very strong and were hard to let go. They were both let go for a similar reason and a purpose. They foreshadowed death and they had similarities. The dog and Lennie were both more problems than blessings. They also were both let go with time and the victims died unaware with what was going to happened to them. Would you kill someone or let someone be killed that you hold on to for so many years and known all your life?
