An interview essay is a piece of writing that helps the reader learn more about the subject of the interview and the surrounding situation. An interview essay’s objective differs depending on the situation. An interview essay about a person who witnessed a historical event, for example, will differ from an interview with a social media influencer for a lifestyle website. This type of writing is regularly taught in school settings, and it is assigned to students in both general education and journalism classes.
How to write an interview essay
If you are writing an interview essay, here are some steps you can use:
1. Research your topic
It may be easier to think of questions to ask your topic if you understand the background of the interview. Prior to the interview, learn everything you can about the person you’ll be interviewing. This way, instead of spending your time on basic biographical data, you may spend your interview asking questions that begin with “how” and “why.” For example, if you’re planning on interviewing your favorite author about their career, you may look up information like where they were born, where they went to school, and how many books they’ve published on the internet ahead of time.
