Generosity in Beowulf

Table of Content

Generosity is often linked to wealthy philanthropists who donate money, but I believe it goes beyond that and is not limited to the rich. Generosity includes empathy, understanding others’ experiences, tolerance, forgiveness, kindness, and returning the good deeds done for us. In Beowulf, the protagonist symbolizes the ideal concept of generosity in life.

Despite the potential danger, Beowulf made a firm decision to sail to Denmark and assist Hrothgar’s people after learning about the destruction caused by Grendel. In the text, it states that Beowulf selected the strongest and bravest men from the Geats, totaling fourteen individuals, and led them to their boat (206-208). Throughout this period, he showed empathy towards the suffering of the Danes and offered to eliminate the monster as if it was his own issue. This display of willingness to help showcases a generous nature.

On his first night in Denmark, Beowulf faced a challenge from Unferth, who was both an anti-hero and a coward. Unferth accused Beowulf of losing a swimming contest with Brecca. In response, the text warns Unferth that his luck may change if he dares to challenge Grendel. Beowulf, however, displayed great magnanimity by not responding to Unferth’s harsh and malevolent criticism. Despite the embarrassment caused by Unferth, Beowulf still fought and ultimately killed Grendel with great valor, showing the Danes his courage and tolerance.

The theme of generosity is exemplified not only by Beowulf but also by other characters such as Wiglaf. The text mentions that Wiglaf showed courage, strength, skill, and boldness when Beowulf needed him the most. Despite never having fought before, Wiglaf rushed to Beowulf’s side and bravely faced the ferocious dragon when his king was in trouble while fighting it. Beowulf illustrates the theme of generosity consistently throughout the story.

In Calcutta, Mother Teresa demonstrated great generosity by living amongst the poorest in society. As a Catholic charity missionary, she chose not to donate money, but instead provided medication, bandages, and food to those suffering from Hansen’s disease. This included opening a home for the sick and needy, without expecting any financial reimbursement.

Mother Teresa resided with the patients, constantly available to assist them. Despite this, the patients questioned her selfless assistance and suspected her motives. Mother Teresa, disheartened by the patients’ reactions, believed that poverty bred distrust in others. Consequently, she felt compelled to offer even more welcoming and compassionate care to the impoverished. Her presence in India brought light and hope to the lives of all the needy individuals she aided.

Being generous and empathetic towards others is a greater act of kindness than merely giving money. I truly admire my parents for their immense generosity as they never consider the expenses they incur on me. Irrespective of how I behave towards them, they consistently display kindness. As the sole child in my family, I have been excessively pampered and occasionally find it challenging to control my anger when I am around them.

While in middle school, I had a negative encounter playing tennis with my close friend that left me feeling upset. In an attempt to lift my spirits, my parents showed their support by taking me out for my favorite meal. However, due to my immaturity and sense of entitlement at the time, I became irritated and started questioning why they were celebrating despite my loss. Despite acting disrespectfully towards them, my parents chose not to dwell on my awful temper. Instead, they empathized with my feelings of frustration and offered guidance on how to overcome temporary obstacles in life.

Gradually, I was pulled out of the darkness and began to genuinely appreciate their efforts. The way they tolerated and empathized with me made me perceive them as the most generous individuals in my surroundings. Personally, I consider myself to be a gracious person because I strive to understand others’ emotions and assist them in difficult situations. For instance, when Steven Ha injured his ligament in his ankle last weekend, I assured him of my availability for assistance. Moreover, I aided him by carrying his backpack and opening doors.

Even though the actions cannot be equated to a large monetary donation, they still fall under the category of generosity, compassion, and willingness to help. According to my own definition, generosity encompasses empathy for others, tolerance, and showing kindness even to an enemy. Personally, I aspire to be a successful businessman deeply engaged in philanthropy. Therefore, my idea aligns with my life plan as it allows me to demonstrate compassion by providing much-needed assistance to the less fortunate.
