I would like to study at Sciences Po at the Reims Campus because of its multidisciplinary program in social sciences with a focus on North America. With this curriculum, I am convinced I would gain a precise knowledge of today’s global issues including environmental change, populism, psychological oppression, and geopolitics. I am interested by the comparative approach of political institutions, law and foreign policy. For example, North America and Europe have different approaches towards environmental governance and gender studies. Countries in Europe trust that a widespread and thorough treaty with solid duties for emanation reductions would turn away the danger presented by a dangerous global warming. Other nations, including major emitters such as the United States, stay careful about this approach. They either hold that achieving a concurrence on a worldwide arrangement is unlikely or would not wish to be lawfully bound by such a framework. In any case, they want to construct components of worldwide atmosphere strategy from the base up, by making a move at the local dimension. Also, recently President Donald Trump made the decision to withdraw the United States from the Paris Agreement, which has in goal to undertake ambitious efforts to combat climate change. The United States believe that the Paris Agreement undermines U.S. aggressive edge and weakens both business and traditional energy businesses. Regarding gender equality, the United States and Europe also have a different perspective. The #MeToo movement that made its debut in 2017 concerning sexual harassment thought to have the potential to bring about a dramatic reduction in gender inequality. But even though a significant amount of powerful men were convicted, it wasn’t the case for now Supreme Court judge Brett Kavanaugh. Also, now that he has been admitted to the Supreme Court, there could likely be an overturn of Roe v. Wade regarding the laws towards abortion. On the other side, the European Commission, created a strategic engagement for gender equality 2016-2019 with a priority in areas such as increasing female labour market participation and economic independence of women and men, reducing the gender pay, earnings and pension gaps and combating gender-based violence. These are the type of global problems that I want to learn about and be able to address. For instance, I’d like to comprehend why a few governments are moving towards debasement. I want to be able to be part of making our lives better. I’d like to gain a more profound comprehension of difficulties of global relations among nations and how we can bring together ourselves for a better future (multilateralism).
I think concrete measures can influence people’s life. I started an association at my school called EOB which stands for End Of Bullying. It’s a club that has in goal to make school a safer and more enjoyable experience. I believe that one’s behavior towards others is often defined at a young age. This program focuses on young kids from five to ten years old. By allowing kids to be aware of what the difference between sympathy and empathy is at a young age for example, we can try to prevent future bullying situations. We are in the process of putting in motion what is known as the “bench system”. This bench, which will be decorated by the school’s own students, will allow kids who feel lonely, to come and sit. Other children will then be aware and will hopefully allow him or her to be friends with them.
I would also be interested in studying at Sciences Po at the Le Havre campus because it would allow me to focus on the political, geopolitical and economic issues of the Asia-Pacific region, in a comparative perspective with Europe. Addressing the challenges of the region, such as political brutality, development and sustainable growth, impact of Confucianism, trade wars is critical for the 21st century. The Asia-Pacific area is characterized by a multi-millennial history, an unprecedented development of financial centers, and specific sociological and cultural situation. For example, where Europe’s environmental issues are contained and objectives are constructed to prevent global warming, China’s are plentiful and affecting both the country’s environment and human health. Also, China is in charge of 47% of the world’s coal consuming, which is more than every single other nation on the planet consolidated. On July 3, 2018, China announced a new plan that is a modified version of the previous Air Pollution Action Plan that was originally released in September 2013.
