DEDICATION
We dedicate our dissertation work first and foremost to ourselves who wanted so much to pursue System Analysis and Design. Moreover, we dedicate it to our school, Kalinga-Apayao State College and to our loving parents who supported us since the beginning of our studies and who have been a great source of motivation and inspiration. They have given us the drive and discipline to tackle any task with enthusiasm and determination. Without their love and support this project would not have been made possible. Finally, this project is dedicated to all those who believe in the richness of learning.
INTRODUCTION
One of the strongest instincts we have is the desire to learn new things about the world we live in. In fact, through our entire life we never stop learning new things. This has been crucial for our survival, but it also stimulates our curiosity. Very young children learn by copying the behavior of others. Learning is later extended to acquiring knowledge through other modes of communication, e. g. through books, lectures and labs. Innovation have made possible for the operations of the computer easy enough in processing record systems such as, creation of data records, storing, filing and retrieval of data.
As years come, our society and its surroundings has affected of technology, the usage of knowledge of tools. “Technology help to develop more advanced economies to solve problems, fulfill needs and satisfy wants” a researcher taken by the researchers. With the effect of technology, internet came out. And “increasing importance of the internet as a publishing and communication medium poses many challenges for the institutional repositories entrusted with the tedious task of preserving and providing access to our digital heritage.
But the challenges are not only in terms of creating the technical standards and tools for the preservation of online media they are also in terms of determining what are historically significant in the first place. It is the motion of historical significance that is discounted in recent debates about preserving the internet” by Craig(2005). Kalinga-Apayao State College is a Competitive Public School whose privilege is to give good education to everyone who does not afford to enroll in other universities and private Schools that have high tuition fees. They always secure the best way to make their students comfortable with their universities.
The Kalinga-Apayao State College has increased in student’s population and at the same time, the number of works of the registrar and student’s grades to be processed has also increased. One of the responsibilities of the registrar office is to keep the student`s grades data secured for their records and purposes. The Kalinga-Apayao State College are manually distributed their grades to the students, they are using database system in encoding grades. The registrar office encoded the grades of the students once the instructors submitted their grading sheets.
The registrar office will release the grades of the students after encoding and the students will secure their grades from the registrar office. A student Grade Inquiry System via SMS Technology of Kalinga-Apayao College through Short Messaging Service provides efficient and accurate grade reports. On the other hand, it intends to perform the following operations; study and develop the manual operation by the office of the registrar; find out what are the circumstances causes the delay of releasing of grades; minimize the time consumed in searching for the grades of the students in the filling and retrieval of data.
To ease these difficulties in knowing the grades, a system using SMS or Short Message Service will be used. Since mobile phone seems to be a positive feature which most individual`s possess, and take almost in all places with them, it is therefore an extremely effective means of transporting information to them quicker and easier. Through this study the researchers attempt to design and develop grading system which wants to enhance process and flow of the old system. It will also eliminate tons of papers used in computerized grading sheet per quarter, and summary sheet.
The grade will directly encode in the online system by the instructors. Students can also view their grades anywhere and anytime in just one way using SMS. REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE
The review of literature briefly followed the history of the Student Grade Inquiry System via SMS technology. Mobile Education Services based on SMS and their Architecture comparison. Wireless mobile application can be differentiated by two underlying technology platforms: such as, wireless web based technology or short message services (SMS). SMS is a basic and common feature given by cellular operators to users. To use WAP features, users have to activate GPRS facility and they have to mobile phone which has WAP capability.
Recently the growing influence of SMS has attracted significant attention. As convenient and low cast mobile communication Technology, SMS is experiencing very rapid growth. In 2001, 700 million mobile phones user worldwide sent an average of 20 billion SMS messages every month. Indeed the volume of SMS messages sent in December 2001 was 30 billion worldwide and it was expected to grow to 100 million by the end of 2002. In Europe, Norway leads the region with an average of 47 messages sent per month in 2001 while Philippines lead the Asia pacific region with 336 SMS messages.
The World Wide increasing services has spurred the development of SMS commerce applications, which mainly ever consumer-oriented business such as alerting, ticket booking and retailing given that the huge SMS messaging customer base could potentially serve as major component of the SMS commerce customer base, many commerce providers are becoming more interested in SMS commerce applications. The school is an educational organization has a lot of valuable information which can be provided to the students such as grade release enrollment information, School announcement, internship opportunity.
IF the school can provide them in the SMS service the student can get the information easier and faster. They can request the information from the service provider at their own convenient time through their cell phones.
TECHNOLOGICAL BACKGROUND
The Non Functional Requirements A non-functional requirement is used by the researcher to specify the requirements criteria that can be used to judge the operation of a system rather than specific behaviors, how a system is supposed to process. The non-functional requirements of the proposed system are the following: Security. n terms of security, the proposed system is exclusively for the Kalinga-Apayao State College Grade Inquiry.
The administrator can access the system with correct username and password. If the login process is not successful, the user is prompted to repeat the operation. In the part of the students, he/she can access the proposed system by inquiring only their grades, location and availability of bibliographies. Usability. The system is designed and developed to be efficient and usable with regards to the needs of the school personnel and students. Maintainability.
The system can easily correct the faults and can adapt to the system environment. The Functional Requirements The main functions of the proposed Student Grade Inquiry via SMS Technology of Kalinga-Apayao state College Bulanao Tabuk City are: Before the students use the services, they must pay the services through the website. Students pay the services using credit cards or bank transfer. Base on the payment user will get points or add the user’s balance which will be used to use the services. After that, students can use the services and send the request to the SMS server.
SMS server will check the ID and password and compare to the student database. If the ID and password are correct, server will check the user’s balance. If there are enough points, server will check the answer based on user’s request. The answer will be sent to the user and the user’s balance will be deducted.
