Sam & Suzy Connection
In Wes Anderson and Roman Coppola’s right of passage screenplay, Moonrise Kingdom, the connection of Sam & Suzy advances. The protagonist Sam Shukusky, is an orphan and seems to be misunderstood and he seeks a family throughout the play. There are three ways Sam and Suzy connect with each other, both are misunderstood, they feel unloved, and love one another. This essay will show how Sam and Suzy connect with each other. The first connection between Sam and Suzy is that they are misunderstood. Sam’s scouts and foster family do not understand him. The scouts and foster family think he is crazy and emotionally disturbed. When Mr.Billingsley and Captain Sharp are on the phone Mr.Billingsley says “He’s a good boy, he’s got a good heart but it’s not fair to the others you see? He’s emotionally disturbed. The Billingsley do not really understand Sam and neither do the scouts. When the scouts found Sam and Suzy the first time Deluca stats to Suzy “you shouldn’t be friends with him…because he’s crazy.” Seems like everyone has their own opinion about Sam. Redford even says “He’s emotionally disturbed because his family died.” Nobody really knows Sam’s problems but Sam, same for Suzy. Suzy is the only person who knows how she feels about her own life. Suzy’s family do not understand her. “She eats a bowl of tomato soup alone in the pantry.” Suzy likes to be alone and reading her books about lives she will like to have. Suzy found a pamphlet on top of the refrigerator named “Coping with a Troubled Child” and Suzy feels as if her parents think she has problems.
That is why Suzy is depressed. The second connection is that Sam and Suzy feel unloved from their families. Sam’s foster family doesn’t really care for him. When Sam was writing each other Suzy “Five of Sam’s foster brothers watch calmly as the sixth throws Sam against the wall then jumps on top of him, pinning his arms to the floor while Sam struggles crazily.” His foster family is not nice to him and do not show him love and affection like a real family should. The Billingsley’s do not really care to understand Sam they’ve given up on him. When Captain Sharp calls the Billingsley’s to let them know that same has run away Mr.Billingsley stats that “we can’t invite him back, at this time.” They did not want Sam to return to their home. Suzy’s parents doesn’t really pay her any attention. This is why she eats in the pantry or sit in the window and read books all day. The books Suzy reads are stories that she wants her life to be like. She wants to be an orphan because she thinks there lives are more special. If her parents payed more attention to her maybe she wouldn’t want her life to be more like a book. The third connection is the love Sam and Suzy has for one another. Sam and Suzy both really care for each other. They care so much they decided to run away together not knowing where they were going to go. When the two of them were in the woods and Suzy showed Sam the pamphlet she found on the fridge in her home at first Sam laughed, but he then tells Suzy “I’m on your side.” Suzy feels like know one can relate to her but Sam. This is why they love and care for each other. They both have a story and feel a way about their lives and families. The difference is that Sam wants the life that Suzy has and she wants the life that Sam has. They don’t really realize that both of their lives has problems. Sam and Suzy are willing to protect each other and their relationship. When the scouts found them and are trying to bring them back to Captain Sharp and Scout Master Ward Suzy stabs one of the scouts in the back and hits one with his bow and arrow twice.
They are willing to whatever it takes to be together. Sam and Suzy are happy with each other and thats why they decide to get married. When Suzy’s mother is washing her in the tub Suzy says “we’re in love,we just want to be together.” Sam and Suzy are young but they know what it feels like to love one another. Wes Anderson made it understandable that even though they were young they still felt love. There is no age limit for finding real love and knowing when you have the one you want to be with for the rest of your life. Sam wanted the love his parents had. Sam and Suzy went above and beyond to be together. They ran away together twice knowing that eventually they would get caught but to them it was worth being together. Sam and Suzy are even willing to die to be together. They were about to jump off the top of the church building into the water, during a really bad storm. Suzy and Sam showed how far they are willing to go to be with each other despite others opinions. That is showing how they really love each other. This is the love connection they both share for one another. Throughout the essay I stated the connections between Suzy and Sam. I realized as I was writing this paper and as i read the screenplay that the connections these two young people had are connections adults look for throughout their life. The types of connections they shared are connections people look for in love and marriage. The actions in this screenplay are
actual things that happen in the world and people’s day to day lives. This Wes Anderson screenplay can relate to so many people’s lives and real love situations that the world goes through. Not just young people but older adults as well.
