As the days goes by, we can see that everybody change the way people have their lifestyle. The Recreation and Leisure in which people loves to do now if ever they have time, this is their way to relax. In such things it will also explain the different functions of recreation.

In which it explains also the factors promoting the growth of recreation
and the type of organized recreation that helps us promote the recreation and leisure more well-known. Also it explains the major recreation service components the sports and tourism.

It also explains the different recreations that linked to the growth of tourism such as Theme parks, Water parks, Fun Centers, and Sports Tourism.

The Gaming Entertainment Industry are the popular form of leisure in where people mostly enjoy it. Where people loves to gamble and entertain their selves in gaming industry. It also discuss brief history of Gaming Entertainment.

The games and facilities that exist on the Casino Floor such as bingo and keno, slot machine, table games and the reason why people visiting casinos. It also explains the importance of Gaming Entertainment and why people have an addiction to Gambling.

Meaning of Recreation and Leisure

The dictionary defines recreation as the process of giving new life to something, of restoring something.

Leisure is defined as the productive, creative or contemplative use of free time.

Recreational Activities

Recreational activities include all kinds of sports, both team and individual such as baseball, softball, football, basketball, volleyball, tennis, badminton, swimming and skiing. Hiking, jogging, aerobics and rock
climbing are active forms of recreation. Passive recreational activities include reading, fishing, playing and listening to music, gardening, playing computer games and watching television or movies.

Varied Views of Recreation and Leisure

For some, recreation means the network of public agencies that provide parks, playgrounds, swimming pools, sports fields and community centers in several cities, towns, counties or park districts.

For others, recreation may be found in a senior center, a sheltered workshop for mentally retarded individuals or a treatment center for physical rehabilitation.
Environmentalists may be principally concerned about the impact of outdoor forms of recreation on our natural surroundings the forests, mountains, rivers and lakes which are the national heritage of a nation.

Recreational Participation
The most common motion of recreation is that it is primarily a participation in sports and games. Recreation actually includes an extremely broad range of leisure activities including travel and tourism, cultural entertainment, participation in the arts, hobbies, membership in social clubs or interest groups, nature- related activities such as hunting and fishing, attendance at parties, special events and fitness activities.

Motivations for Recreational Participation
Many participants take part in recreation as a form of relaxation and release from the pressures of work and other tensions. Another recreational motivation is the need to express creativity, expose hidden talents or pursue excellence in various forms of personal expression.

For some participants, active, competitive recreation offers a channel for releasing hostility and aggression or for struggling against the environment in adventurous, high- risk pursuits.
Other important motivations are exploring new environments through travel
and tourism or seeking self discovery or personality enrichment through continuing education .

Factors Promoting the Growth of Recreation
The following are the factors that helped bring about the growth of recreation: 1. Increase in discretionary time – A key factor underlying the growth of recreation has been the growth of free or discretionary in the 20th century. Due to advanced mechanical equipment and automated process in factories, agriculture and the service fields, productive capacity increased remarkably during the second half of the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century. In addition, more holidays and longer vacations are now enjoyed by most employees. Because of improved Social Security benefits and pensions plans, many employees can now avail of fifteen or more years of full-time leisure after retirement. 2. Influence of technology- Sophisticated technology has provided new forms of recreation for the people. Outdoor recreation uses complex and expensive devices in activities such as skydiving, scuba diving, boating, roller blades, skiing and snow boarding. 3. Public interest in health and fitness- a key trend in the 20th century is the growth of public interest in exercise and physical fitness programs. Many people are now concerned about improving their health, vitality and appearance through diet and exercise. Research showed that the most successful fitness programs were those that provided recreational interest and satisfaction. 4. Com-modification of leisure- Various forms of recreation are being developed by profit-seeking business. Giant corporations have taken control of music, television, movie business, sport stadiums, cruise ships, theme park and other leisure operations. Many elaborate are being developed as part of the trend toward com-modification. 5. Therapeutic recreation service- an important aspect of the growth of recreation has been the increased awareness of the recreation needs of persons with physical, mental or social disabilities. In recent years, there has been an increased recognition of the need to provide recreational programs for special populations such as the mentally retarded, mentally ill, and physically challenged. These programs use the therapeutic recreation as a form of treatment. 6. New leisure roles for women- at present, there is a strong drive by women to play a more equal role in
recreational opportunities. In the past, women were barred from a variety of athletic, outdoor recreation, cultural and social involvements. Women were treated as second-class citizen in leisure opportunities. With the emergence of a strong feminist movement, this inequality was corrected. There is now a growing interest in women’s tennis, golf, gymnastics track and field.

Types of Organized Recreation

1. Government recreation agencies- these are the federal, state, provincial agencies and local departments that provide recreation and leisure services as a primary function. 2. Voluntary nonprofit organization – These are non-governmental,non-profit agencies, both sectarian and non-sectarian which serve the public at large with multiservice programs that often include a substantial element of recreational opportunity. 3. Private membership organizations -They provide recreational and social activities for their own members and in some cases assist community recreation needs. 4. Commercial recreation enterprises -These are vately owned businesses which operate to make a profit. 5. Employee recreation programs- They serve those who work for companies or employers by providing recreation as a part of a total personnel benefits package, linked to other services concerned with employee health and fitness. 6. Armed forces recreation- Although it is obviously a form of government- sponsored activity, it is unique in its setting and purpose. 7. Campus reaction- includes intramural athletics or sports clubs, social activities, travel programs, performing arts groups, entertainment, lunges, film series and other forms of recreation on college and university campuses. 8. Therapeutic recreation services- Include any type of program designed to meet the needs of persons with physical or mental disabilities. Two major Recreation Service Components

In addition to the eight types of organized recreation, sports and tourism represent major areas of recreational programming and constitute powerful economic forces through their attraction for people of every age and background. Sports as Popular Recreation

Sports is the first major area of recreational involvement. Of all the types of recreational involvement, sports command the highest of degree of personal interest and emotional involvement both for those who participate actively in them and those who are part of a big number of fans of school, college and professional teams. Sports are generally defined as physical activities demanding exertion and skill, involving competition, carried on with both formal rules and general standards of etiquette and fair play.

Tourism-A Major Recreation Service Components
Tourism is a second major area of diversified recreational involvement. Several major elements in the tourism enterprise which are closely linked to the growth of tourism as a form of recreation are the theme parks, water parks, fun centers and sports tourism. Theme Parks- usually concentrate on one dominant theme which may be historical, cultural or geographical. An example of a theme park with a single theme is the marine zoological Sea World Park. Other parks focus on multiple themes like the Great America in California, a hundred-acre family entertainment center divided into five themes: Home Town Square, Yukon Territory, Yankee Harbor, Country Fair and Orleans Place. The most popular theme park is Disneyland in Anaheim, California which was built by the late Walt Disney around the theme of Disney characters. Water Parks- A specialized type of theme park are the water park. They feature wave pools, slides, chutes, shows and others forms of water-based play and entertainment. Fun centers- in heavily populated metropolitan ares, entrepreneurs have developed a variety of indoor fun centers, ranging from children’s play, gymnastics to family party centers, video game arcades and big restaurants with game area. They offer a combination of computer and video games, billiards, miniature golf, entertainment by clowns and magicians, music and popular fast food refreshment. They also offer packaged birthday poarties and attracted family play activities. Sports tourism- The purpose of sports tourism is to participate directly in a form of sports or attended sports events as a spectator. In the past, only the team traveled; the spectators remained behind to read about their favorite game or to experience the game through radio and television. Today, both the team and the spectators travel to the
game specially where championship games are involved. World Olympics- is the biggest sports event. It attracts millions of spectators and generate millions of dollars in revenue. The Need for Professional Leadership

At present, there is a growing need for qualified professional leadership in the recreation field. Very often, people assume that the task of organizing and conducting recreation programs is relatively simple and that anyone can do it without specialized training. However, the professional’s assignment in the organize recreation field tends to be more complex and difficult than that of the volunteer leader or coach. It must involve carefully studied goals and objectives sophisticated planning techniques.

Challenges Facing the Recreation and Leisure Service Field in the Twenty-first Century Recreational professional must be able to deal creatively with the following challenges: 1. Serve diverse society ( race, age, gender) .

2. Emphasize key social purposes of recreation in working with at-risk youth, serving persons with disabilities and promoting community development. 3. Achieve fuller public understanding of the value of recreation and parks and of the leisure-service profession. 4. Upgrade recreation and park programs and facilities,particularly in inner cities and minority populations. 5. Adopt a benefits-based management approach, researching, providing and publicizing positive outcomes of recreation. 6 . Promote recreation’s identity as health- related field. 7. Develop partnerships with environmental organizations to protect and restore wild lands, waterways. 8. Employ marketing approach to achieve fiscal sufficiency and gain public respect and support. 9. Expand and improve family-centered programs and facilities. 10. Promote higher values and ethical practices in youth sports competition. 11. Strive for fuller mainstreaming of persons with disabilities in community recreation programs. 12. Plan for long-term role of recreation and leisure in potentially job-scarce economy. 13. Develop higher levels of professionalism through accreditation, certification, continuing education or program standards. 14. Unity separate branches of recreation and leisure
service fields(public, non profit, commercial, therapeutic) in common programs and projects.

Chapter 11
The Gaming Entertainment Industry
Gambling or the gaming industry has become a major force in the tourism industry. The gaming industry has grown from a limited acceptance in the financial and public sector in Nevada to a recognized growth industry. While gaming has always been a popular form of recreation, it has been controversial. The gaming industry includes a whole range of activities including casinos ( both land-based and riverboats), card games, charitable games, lottery operated games and betting on greyhound and horse races. More than 500 billion dollars is betting or wagered on games or races every year. The total amount of bets is called “handle” and the net amount of spending by the customer is called “win” by the gaming industry. The annual industry win that is almost 48 million dollars represents the actual consumer spending for gaming activities. Casinos and lotteries make up around 85 percent of consumer spending in the gaming industry. Meaning of Gaming Entertainment

Gaming entertainment refers to one subset of the gaming industry that is the casino industry what used to be entertainment. Gaming entertainment offers games of risk as part of a total package of entertainment and leisure activities. It serves “social gamblers” or customers who combined gambling with many other activities during their stay. Gaming entertainment refers to the casino gaming business and all its aspects hotel operations, entertainment offerings, retail shopping, recreational activities and other types of operation in addition to betting on the gaming floor. The entertainment range from live performance by the most famous entertainers production shows that use the latest technology. The gaming entertainment business has many revenue-generating activities. Gaming revenue is obtained from casino win or the money that guests spend on the casino floor. Non-gaming revenue comes from sources that are not related to betting on the casino floor. Since the gaming entertainment concept continues to emphasize activities other than gambling, non-gaming revenue is continuously increasing. The gaming entertainment takes many forms. The mega resorts of Las Vegas and Atlantic City are considered the centers of the gaming entertainment industry. There are casinos that take the form of commercially operated businesses that are privately or publicly held. Some are land-based which means that they are housed in regular buildings. Others are riverboat casinos that cruise up and down a river. Still others are dockside casinos are barges that are moored in water but do not cruise.

History of the Gaming Entertainment Business
The gaming entertainment business has its roots in Las Vegas. From a dusty watering hole less 70 years ago, it has been transformed into the casino entertainment capital of the world. From 1940-1978, Las Vegas had a monopoly of the casino business, not the gaming entertainment business. During this time, casinos had no hotel rooms, entertainment and other amenities. Centralized gaming control by regulatory agencies such as Gaming Control Board and the Nevada Gaming Commission developed during these years. Strict rules were established as to who and what must be licensed Several state – run lotteries were established in the 1960’s because states realized that large revenues could be obtained from lottery gaming. In the mid 1970’s, a federal Commission on the Review of the National Policy Toward Gambling issued a report that legalization and control of gambling activity is under the jurisdiction of state governments. Casino gambling was regarded as a desperate remedy for the severe economic situation of Atlantic City. In November 1976, the Casino Control Act legalized casino gambling in the state of New Jersey. The Act initiated the number of fees and taxes in the casino hotel business that would support regulatory costs and provide investment funds for the revitalization of the economy of Atlantic City. Desiring similar benefits as those obtained by New Jersey, Iowa legalized riverboat casinos in 1989, Illinois, Mississippi, Louisiana, Missouri,Indiana and Michigan followed it. Casinos exist in many parts of the world. Well-known areas for casino gambling include Monaco, the Caribbean, London, Nice, Macao, Rio de Janeiro, Panama city and the Bahamas. Because of the spread of the casino industry throughout United States, Canada and other parts of the world, the competitive nature of the industry created a need for what is now known as gaming entertainment with addition of non- casino attractions.

Thus, gaming entertainment is a natural evolution of the casino industry. Games and Facilities that exist on the Casino Floor

1. Table games- involve wagering or betting between the casino and customers. This include blackjack/twenty- one, dice/ craps games, roulette, the Big- 6, baccarat, mini- baccarat, pai- grow, poker and any other type of gaming where wagers are placed on a table or table layout as an integral part of the game. 2. Card games- casino card games are different from table games in that the casino does not wager against the player but merely offers games in which players can gamble against each other with the casino providing or dealing the games. 3. Slot machine/ Video Games- slot machines feature simulated or actual spinning reels that are activated by the pull of a handle or the push of a button. 4. Keno and Bingo- both are based on random number selections. 5. Race and Sports books- race books feature wagering on horse track betting while sports book feature professional and collegiate sporting events. 6. Casino Cage- the financial customer transactions and accounting for monies handled on the casino floor represent integral activities for the cage. 7. Surveillance- it maintains a careful watch on all gaming activities through the use of high- tech cameras and video recording devices. It is also known as the “eye-in-the-sky”. 8.Ancillary departments- these are the support departments that include restaurants operations, bars, entertainment centers such as lounges or showrooms and lodging facilities. Reasons for Visiting Casinos

1. The lure of gambling- many people just like to gamble, wager or enter games of chance or skill. For some, it is a chance to strike it rich or win some extra pocket money. Others are lured to gambling because of the thrill and excitement of winning.

2. Recreation/ entertainment- the casino environment is an exciting form of entertainment and for many, it is a mental escape from the stressful pressures of work.

3. Social- senior citizens and retirees and drawn to the casinos for the social interaction that occurs with other customers and the casinos employee.

4. Economic- some casinos operate their rooms division at break- even or offer low room rates to attract gamblers.

Gaming entertainment is now big business. The number of gaming entertainment companies has recently tripled with a marketing capitalization of 30 billions dollars. The gaming entertainment industry pays more than two billion dollars a year in gambling privilege taxes to state governments. It has revitalized economies through new capital investment, job creation, new tax revenue and increase tourism. Casino operations are labor intensive. Thus, they create more direct jobs than those in other industries. Casino gaming has created more then 700,000 direct and indirect jobs with wages of approximately 21 billion dollars.

Controversial elements of the Gaming Entertainment Industry
The gaming industry has some controversial elements. Majority of people find a visit to the casino enjoyable and entertaining and have no objection to the gaming entertainment business. However, others have strong objection to casino gaming base on the moral belief or opinions. They believe that there are social costs associated with gaming entertainment operations. The two major concerns associated with gaming entertainment are the impact on crime, both organized crime and street crime and the impact on gambling addiction as a result of the spread of casino entertainment. Organized Crime and Casinos

The common assumption that casinos increase crime is not substantiated by current research. This reality together with the professionalization regulatory bodies has undermined the crime argument against gambling. Gambling Addiction

Gambling addiction or pathological gambling is a chronic and progressive failure to resist impulses to gamble. It is a gambling behavior that compromises, disrupts or damages personal, family or vocational pursuits. The phenomenon of pathological gambling is a very personal one. It is the extent to which gambling interferes with ones life, ones job, ones family

The main participants in the gaming entertainment business are Mirage Resorts, Harrah’s Entertainment, Hilton Hotels Corporation, ITT Corporation, Circus Circus and MGM Grand. All of them have diverse property portfolios and solid business practices. Mirage Resorts- operates casinos in Las Vegas. The Mirage Property is a casino/ hotel that features a volcano that erupts at regular intervals. Its Treasures Island casino hotel has a pirate theme, highlighted by live sea battles between a pirate ship and British war ship. Harrah’s Entertainment- operates casinos throughout the United States.

It also operates riverboat and dockside casinos. Harrah’s Entertainment Inc. is the premiere name in casino entertainment. It is the largest casino entertainment company in North America. Hilton Hotels Corporation- owns, manages and franchises more than 220 hotels around the world. Hilton is the largest gambling business in the United States. Its gaming operations include three casino hotels in Las Vegas , two in Reno and a riverboat casino in New Orleans. ITT Corporation- is focused on the hospitality, gambling and information services industries. Circus Circus- owns and operates casinos and hotels in three states. The company builds gambling resorts for middle income families. MGM Grand- operates the MGM Grand Hotel, the world’s largest casino/ hotel. Career Opportunities in the Gaming Entertainment Industry

Career opportunities in the gaming entertainment industry are unlimited. They are divided into five career tracks namely: hotel operations, food and beverage operations, casino operations, retail operations and entertainment operations. Hotel Operations- very similar to the career opportunities in the full- service hotel industry. The only exception is that food and beverage can be a separate division and not a part of the hotel operation. The rooms and guest services departments offer the most opportunities for students of hospitality management. Food and Beverage Operations

In restaurant management and the culinary arts. Gaming e ntertainment industry has many food and beverage outlets including restaurants, hotel room service, banquets and conventions and retail outlets. There are many executive- level management positions in both front and back- of- the- house food and beverage operations in gaming entertainment operations. Casino Operations

Casino operations are divided into five functional areas: gaming operation staff, casino service staff, marketing staff, human resources staff and finance and administration staff. Gaming operation staff includes slot machine technicians, table game dealers and table- game supervisors. Casino service staff includes security, purchasing, maintenance and facilities engineers. Marketing staff includes public relations, market research and advertising professionals. Human resources staff includes employee relations, compensation, staffing and training specialists. Finance and administration staff includes lawyers, accounts payable, audit, payroll and income control specialist. Retail Operations

The increased emphasis on non- gaming sources of revenue in gaming entertainment business demands an expertise in all aspects of retail operations, from store design and layout to product selection, merchandising and sales control. Lesson Learned
We have learned the meaning of recreation and leisure on how to enjoy it and the factors that help promoting the growth of recreation. The different agencies the private, public and government types of organized recreation
and we also learned how theme park, water parks, fun centers and sports tourism operates and functions in different countries. We learned the difference of gaming industry and gaming entertainment and the different games and facilities that you can do in visiting in the casino it adds us knowledge to be more familiar with those facilities. We also learned the history of Gaming Entertainment Business on when casino was legalized in New Jersey and how does gaming industry starts we also learn why people have a so called gambling addiction. The different types of career opportunities that we can sight for in order for us to know it.

All in all by making our report we can be familiar in all of the words that we don’t know, after making it we add knowledge about recreation and leisure as well as the gaming industry business on how to handle it.
