In the beginning of this article it describes on how rape became. The cause is “medicalized” a social problem. The two sociologists interviewed a sample of men who had been sent to prison for rape. The men talked about their motives on why they committed these violent acts. An assumption is that male sexual aggression is unusual or strange. The feminist perspective views rape as an act of violence and social control to “keep women in their place. ” They also view pornography as an important element in a larger system of sexual violence.
Many convicted rapists justify their rapes by saying that their victim enjoyed herself despite the use of a weapon. Many argued, they had been instrumental in making her fantasy come true. A rapist might see his act as a legitimized form of revenge or punishment. Some of the men said that they raped their wives or other significant women to get even with them. Men believe they have the right to punish and discipline women. Rape is used “to put women in their place. ” Men take out their anger issues on women to feel more powerful and know that someone is less than them.
Indeed a number of men indicated that the decision to rape has been made after they realized they were in control of the situation. One man explained, “Rape gave me power to do what I wanted to do without feeling I had to please a partner or respond to a partner. ” In conclusion all these men justify their crimes as being in control and getting even with women. They felt like having committed rape was fine and didn’t have a conscience. Sociological concepts Diana Scully and Joseph Marolla developed the hypnotists that rape is like most human behavior.
This means that some men learned to think of rape as appropriate behavior. These men raped for many reasons. Blow off steam over problems they are having. To get sex, to feel powerful, to hurt women, form of revenge and to get even with someone. For some it was form of recreation and some would rape with friends on weekends. Rapists are more likely to believe rape myths. Rape myths could mean either the women caused her rape by the way they dressed and acted. Or by changing her mind after having consensual sex.
Sociological perspective that was used I believe was not treating these rapist as sick, distributed or diseased. They treated them as human beings. The psychopathological perspective for rapist is to be believed as if they are psychologically disturbed. That it’s something wrong in the brain, and that psychologist believes that rapist is not accountable for their own actions because they are sick. It is an issue that occurred to them at a young age and as far as I know, can be treated, if only they continue to use treatment on a daily base.
The sociological perspective is that it not a diseased, but an issue that sociality make them believe that raping a women is alright. Sociology study what people do weather their behavior is conforming or deviant, wither they are please others or disgust them. No matter what behavior is study, social theories take us beyond common sense. For example, porn, they show how it’s alright for a man to force a woman because it’s a secret fantasy women have. Fashion, now a day women dress provocative, which make men believe that since they are dressed that way, they asking for it.
Some personality may be another person, some women have a personality of being too friendly, meaning being too flirtatious without meaning too. Being a tease, one minute having him close, then the next minute pushing him away. What Diana Scully and Joseph Marolla did was treat the inmates as if they were human beings, but at the same time using psychological term, by asking every person a different question. The research method that was used for this study, I believe was the survey. They send out 3,500 letters to men serving times in 7 prisons in Virginia.
About 25% of the prisoners agreed to be interviewed. They separated these men by the basis of age, education, race-ethnicity, severity of offense, and previous criminal record. These resulted in a sample of 98 prisoners. Scully and Marolla interviewed have of the samples because of the bias researcher. This is why they went with the survey method. A survey is which you would ask individuals a serious of questions. This was the best way for Scully and Marolla to do their research since there was too many people to keep track.
