Hello, my name is Anita Orji. I am a student at Washington High School. My life goal is to get a Bachelor of Science in Molecular Bioscience which consists of classes like; biology, chemistry, human genetics, and physics. I selected this major because taking this class would give me the required classes to apply to an optometry school or the pre-requisites. I plan to attend Johnson County Community College(JCCC) and then transfer to KU Edwards Campus through the degree in 3 programs. After getting my Bachelor’s degree, I plan to go to attend the school of optometry at University of Missouri–St. Louis. in which I will get my Doctor of Optometry (OD) degree.
My educational goal is also to learn as much as I can from whoever will be giving it to me. On the other hand, my career vision is to one day be able to provide affordable health care and give back to communities in the United States. I am applying for this scholarship because it would help lessen the impact of rising tuition cost & student loans and would give me more time to focus on my studies instead of working which would reduce my risk of dropping out and not getting the degree I want. I should be chosen for this scholarship because I am a hard-working student and I will commit myself to effectively to take advantage of the opportunity that the scholarship will provide me. I am also persistent. There may be other worthy candidates that probably deserve the award as much as I do, but my work ethic and past accomplishments are a good indicator of my future success.
My hard work paid off during my sophomore year in high school when I was picked as a member of the National Society of High School Scholars. During my junior year in high school, I was picked for the superintendent honor roll for my school district and also when I did a summer internship at KUMC and presented my summer research, I was then given an opportunity to present my summer project again at the Heartland undergraduate biochemistry (HBU) conference.
Making an impact is important to me. Nelson Mandela said; “As I have said, the first thing is, to be honest with yourself. You can never have an impact on the society if you have not changed yourself…Great peacemakers are all people of integrity, of honesty, but humility.” Another quotation by Anthony S. Fauci; “I believe I have a personal responsibility to make a positive impact on society.” These quotes inspired me to be more involved in society. Doing community service has helped me be more aware of things around me and also, I gained self-esteem and confidence in myself.
I also hope to make a favorable impact on the society by giving back to the community which I come from. It always good to realize that even completing trivial things to help others can have an enormous impact. I take pleasure in helping people and there is nothing compared to the joy I feel knowing that I helped someone become happy.
