The Cruel Treatment of Animals Rights in Food Processing

Table of Content

Animal rights is a very controversial subject when it comes to rights. In fact it was listed as number 3 on most Americans’ list of concems. It even outranked global warming at number 5. However even though this may seem very positive there is in fact an exception to this concern. Animals in food processing are often mutilated and severely beaten before they are killed for food. Unfortunately the conditions these animals are put through are approved by the FDA and many American see no problem with the cruel treatment of these animals.

In order to solve this growing problem certain actions must be put into place. First the FDA must change its standards of animal living conditions in the food industry. Because many factories just try to make it across on the bare minimum raising the minimum will increase the proper treatment of animals. Second, productions lines needs to be slowed down, in order to give the workers a chance to properly do their jobs. Lastly, more factory inspectors need to be hired to make sure the factories are following the new rules set in place.

The current FDA finds no problem with the living conditions for animals, and that is where the main problem originates. In order for living condition to improve the FDA must first change its standards on what is acceptable in food processing. In order to do this the FDA must increase the allowable size of the cow pens, chicken cages, and pig pens. Then allow baby calves to spend more time than one day with its mother to reduce stress. Also they should implements mandatory procedures on how animals should be killed, and put in a new law that states workers must check to make sure the animal is dead before they move to the next procedure.

Lastly they should prevent workers form treating animals in the food industry poorly. This will help animals to be treated properly. The new rules may cause factories to lose money because factories like to cram as many animals in one place as they can. However, in the end America will get more money because one many vegetarians and vegan who stopped eating meat because of the cruelty the witnessed may start eating, meat again. Plus many of the countries that don’t want to trade with America because of the way they treat their animals will start trading with America.

The speedy production line that factory workers work on causes many problems. The main one is that the faster the line goes the more inaccurate their work becomes. Once this happens animals that were supposed to be stunned are not, and animals that are supposed to be unconscious are wide awake while they are being killed. In order to change this problem, production lines need to be slowed down.

Once the lines are slowed down the animals will be stunned properly and workers will be able to tell if the animals are awake or unconscious. They will also be able to focus on their job and they will make fewer mistakes. The spread of E coli will also go down because E coli is mainly spread in manufacturing lines because of the speed. Slowing the production lines down will cause the factory to lose money however, it will benefit them in the long run because people buy products that advocates animals rights.

Lastly factory inspectors need to be hired in ordered to make sure factories are abiding by the new rules. Factories will bump the new rules if they don’t feel as if someone or something is keeping them. Factories may also revolt because they are used to not caring about animals’ right and just making money. However if the Government is adamant about these new rules then factories will eventually have to comply.

Animal rights is no joke. Every year, 10 billion domesticated land animals are slaughtered for food in the United States – 27 million each day and 19,000 every minute. Each of those animals have been tortured. Enacting these new law will ensure that America cares about its animals.
