It was a hot summer’s day, with the sun just peering its way through the shade of the grand willow tree which I lay underneath. The tree was old its bark peeling ever so slightly but it’s branches spread out far and wide, providing shade for anyone who wanted. Today that was me. I came for the shade on this hot Sunday afternoon. The park in which the old willow tree lay was not amazing by any means, but it was peaceful. How quiet it was with only the sounds of the birds chirping, and the willow leaves brushing in the wind. All of this peace and quiet brought my racing mind some peace and that brought a smile to my face.I had been sitting under the willow tree’s shade for close to two hours and had not encountered another soul wandering into the park.
I couldn’t understand why nobody else had decided to come to the park on a day like today sure, it wasn’t the biggest park around, but its scenery was spectacular with the little pond on the left hand side of the pathway and the grand willow tree on the right hand side even though its branches extended to cover virtually the entire park. It couldn’t have been the noise as there was none, not like the hustle of cars in the rest of the city. Was it the smell, but how could anyone hate the smell of fresh blossoming jasmine that came from the jasmine bush that covered the entire exterior of the park? It was the kind of sensation that could make anybody, and I mean anybody, smile. The heat just seemed to be getting worse, unbearably hot. This morning the weatherman said it was going to be hot today with a high of 32 but right now it was 37. Like I said, it was unbearably hot. The pond in the park was a beautiful thing to look at, however, in this heat it made the park extremely humid but under the shade of the tree you couldn’t feel the heat it actually made it refreshing, but only in the shade.
I was enjoying the day slowly winding down to an end but with the heat getting worse I was getting a craving for ice cream and there was an ice cream parlour not far from the park, so I decided to go to it. It was a small parlour, nothing spectacular about it, but they sold the best chocolate I have ever tasted. It was a rich dark chocolate ice cream that wasn’t overly sweet as it always had that subtle bitter undertone that left you craving more. As I peered through the glass I could see the chocolate ice cream, it was a fresh batch, still topped with a dozen silky folds on top of it. I thought about how amazing it would be to have a double scoop of the silky rich chocolate ice cream and decided that I was going to have a double scoop to add to my joyous day. As I got the ice cream I could see how the dark brown colour reflected no light but was inviting me in. I got through the first scoop before leaving the parlour.
It was so addictively good that I wasn’t paying enough attention to where I was walking as I was engrossed in the ice cream that by the small step outside the parlour I trip and while preventing myself from falling I drop the ice cream. As I look at it I see the shattered cone and the silky brown chocolate melting into the grooves of the pavement and in no time at all it was completely gone and with it went my joy from the day.
