The title of my book is, The Giver, written by Lois Lowry. This book highlights how Jonas, the main character, lives in a sameness, but soon realizes that’s there is another world outside of The Community and wants to leave. The Giver is a fictional book and is also an award-winning book for children’s literature. In this book Jonas was chosen to become the next Receiver o Memory, and learns about love, pain, and joy. Another thing that makes this book interesting is that you need to have a lot of courage to leave the community so if you try to leave you’re leaving everything and everyone you know.
My first symbol is the blue eyes, which represent Jonas, the Giver, and Gabriel because they all have blue eyes so they stand out from the rest of The Community. This difference shows the impossibility of the communities attempt to control nature no matter what. In addition the fact that only the people with blue eyes are able to see color, and to receive memories. Blue eyes also symbolize that they’re special and they’re there for a reason. However, The Community wants to eliminate individuality because they know differences can create bonds. Another thing that the blue eyes mean is for the people in the book who have them stand out and are unique.
My second symbol is the snow-covered hill, for Jonas the hill represents a gateway. Jonas feels that he needs to reach something that waited in the distance like something good. Riding a sled down the hill is his first memory and his first awareness of the color red. It also signifies his realization that the outside his community, there is a world that’s not about sameness, yet, in the memories of the hill, Jonas learns the relationship between pain and joy. Another thing the hill symbolizes is pain for example, When Jonas was dreaming about him on the hill and started going faster and faster then eventually fell off and broke his leg. The snow-covered hill also represents freedom from equality and non-individuality.
My last and final symbol I the river, Which symbolizes a gate because on the other side of it is another place elsewhere. Since it represents a gate or border, the river symbolizes an escape from The community. The River symbolizes danger because when u try to escape or something else that’s dangerous like when a boy name Caleb drowned in the river. It also symbolizes bravery because Jonas was brave enough to go past the river when he was escaping to save Gabriel because he refused to let him get killed. Another reason the river symbolizes bravery is because Jonas had enough bravery to sneak out of his family unit just to go to the river for his escape plan. One las thing that it represents is compassion because Jonas showed compassion with Gabriel for trying to save him.
In conclusion, Jonas shows how a kind heart and honest character can make a difference in someone’s life. In my opinion The Giver’s memories are really important because they teach you about joy, pain, and sadness. These examples are really good because they show you how to show compassion toward someone and to be honest about this book is how it tells you to care for others. Something earned from this book is that when you have to live in a world where you are like everyone else you I can be different because you’re special in your on way.
