From a young age, I have developed an interest in the healthcare industry. I am always excited seeing healthcare professionals sacrifice their time and efforts to help restore, preserve, and maintain the health and wellness of others. One of my greatest virtues is compassion and empathy. I love to see other people living in health and wellness. As a result, I developed a natural love for the healthcare industry.
In pursuance of this passion, I enrolled for an Associate of Arts program in health administration. Prior to this, I have already gotten an associate of science degree in information management and worked for years as a senior telecom technician, senior technician and network administrator, and knowledge operations manager in different organizations.
However, despite my success and sense of accomplishment in these roles, my passion for the healthcare industry and for making a difference in people’s lives by helping them restore, preserve, and maintain health led me to make a transition to healthcare. After the completion of my associate of arts program, I took a Bachelor of Science in Health Science, concentrating on biological health science and social behavioral health science. I took many important courses in exercise physiology, development psychology, abnormal psychology, and biomechanics, among others. The program helped me acquire many important skills and introduced me to many important concepts in health sciences.
When I wanted to decide on which field in healthcare to specialize in, there were many options. However, I had three criteria to guide me in making the decision. First, as a compassionate and empathetic person, I wanted a career that gives me the greatest opportunity to develop close and personal relationships with those I will be working with. I do not want to be the medical expert that helps people from afar and find it difficult to remember their faces or names a year after. I want to develop close relationships with people and provide the type of care that helps to nurture such relationships. Instead of a one-off meeting, I want a career where I can maintain a close relationship and provide continuous help.
Second, I wanted a career with flexibility. I don’t want a career where the path is so rigidly drawn and there is little room for flexibility and dynamism. Thirdly, I wanted a career where I could work with people in the most difficult circumstances of their lives. It is in those moments where people need help the most that I want to be of the highest service to them.
I explored various options. Some fields in healthcare qualified on two grounds and failed in one. Others only qualified in one. Becoming a medical doctor or dentist did not satisfy the first condition. A physician associate role does not satisfy the first condition, as I would love. While nursing provides more opportunities for personal relationships and, in some cases, long-term relationships, I wanted to involve in something more technical. It was in this pursuit I came to know about the occupational therapy field.
Occupational therapists work with people in the most difficult situations in their lives. Also, because their work requires spending a long period with patients, it provides a platform where the professional can develop personal and long term relationships with the clients. It is impossible to be an occupational therapist without your life being drawn up into the lives of your patients. There is a lot of flexibility and dynamism in the field, which makes room for professional development. It is also an expanding field and many people are beginning to understand its importance more than ever before.
The occupational therapist role aligns with my goals and vision for the healthcare industry, and it is in perfect tandem with my personality. My goal is to work with gerontology, physical rehabilitation, home health and the environmental modification community. I will love to work with wounded veterans, helping them in the rehabilitation journey or work with the geriatric community. At some point, I hope to become a traveling occupational therapist to gain more appreciation for the global dimensions of occupational therapy.
Through this career, I want to work with people in their most difficult circumstances, providing the needed care for them to maintain their meaningful activities, life patterns, daily tasks, and occupational demands. I want to provide adequate help to injured, disabled, and mentally ill patients helping them to develop the skills and aptitudes for daily existence and occupational life. My long-term goal is to open my occupational therapist office and work with other professionals to provide improved and more personalized healthcare delivery. Through my activities, I hope to make significant contributions to the field of occupational therapy and the healthcare industry as a whole.
I am applying for this program to help me acquire the needed skills and competencies to become an occupational therapist and open an occupational therapy office in the nearest future. The program has everything I need to succeed and make this giant leap forward. The presence of industry experts with years of experience as faculty members will give me a better understanding of the working realities of the field.
The focus on practical experience and hands-on skills will make me industry-ready. The multidisciplinary nature of the course will help gain a deeper appreciation for the importance of collaboration among healthcare professionals in delivering the best outcomes. The focus on global standards and the incorporation of the newest trends in the industry makes this program ever relevant. This is the type of education necessary for my career advancement.
My educational background in health administration and health sciences gives me a solid foundation for this program on the technical side. Also, my years of professional experience have equipped me with communication, time management, collaboration, research, and project management skills that will aid me in this study and my career. I will do my best to make maximum use of the opportunity to study in this institution and be a good representative of the values that make it unique.
