The word Happiness can represent many topics. People make it a goal to find happiness because they will be motivated and it’s a necessity in life. Sometimes happiness can be found from through other people, or things that happen around us and so we forget that we can produce it ourselves. There are a lot of ways to be happy, but you can be happier if you can change the right way. “I am happy – but I’m not as happy as I should be.” Gretchen Rubin wrote this quote in the novel “The happiness project”. She starts a project with in the year to change and seek for a happier life. Rubin makes a list that will last twelve month and the first month, January focuses on Vitality.

“Sleep is the new sex” a friend of Rubin said, and its true because people fail to get the recommended seven to eight hours of sleep, also with a bad night sleep it can affect your daily mood. I agree because people don’t sleep enough because of the new distractions we have such as technology. We feel like we get anxiety if we don’t check our phones, watch the new series on Netflix or even from thinking about the upcoming stress problematic situation. Rubin states that developing tricks can change the way you fall asleep. For example, breathing deeply and slowly until you can’t stand it anymore, writing down your thoughts on a piece of paper or putting on socks if your feet are cold. There are a lot of strategies to finding ways to sleep easier but making sure you get the right amount of sleep because being energetic gives you higher self-esteem and the energy to participate in activities that make you happy.

There are many ways of being happy in life and another method is exercising. Exercising benefits your health, thinking, and sleep. Rubin says “exercising twenty minutes a day three days a week for six weeks, persistently tired people boosted their energy” and I agree for the reason that people feel happier with just working out, it may boost their energy but it makes them happy with just feeling satisfied at the end of the workout session into reaching their goal. Walking also has its benefits, it helps you think. Nietzsche wrote, “All truly great thoughts are conceived while walking,” in which it helps people think clearly. Even with five minutes of daylight can improve your mood. Getting light is like taking a shower after a long because you feel relieved and clean. When I was exercising, I was never outside, I was always indoors so I decided to bike ride ten miles a day, that way I can get conditioning and sunlight. Even though I was tired, at the end of the day it lifted my mood, I felt happier, stress relief and my slept better. Setting up goals for exercising can be very motivational and with that motivation it can lead to the pursuit of happiness

Tossing, restoring and organizing is another method that can make you feel happy. People like to keep a lot of things from their past or buy items that are on special and think it would benefit them in some way but, they will only use the item for a certain amount of times and forget about it. Clutter can be anything such as books, clothes, cords, trash and papers. Tossing stuff that you don’t need, or use is one reason to getting rid of clutter. Like clothes that you never use or socks with holes that have stayed in your drawers and never bothered to take them out. Rubin suggests that cleaning your clutter in your home can lead to boosting your happiness. Especially if you have friends coming over and say that your house is cleaned and it feels comfortable, it gives you a feeling of accomplishment and makes you happy.

Completing task can be challenging, they may take up a lot of your time or like Rubin mentions “boomerang errands” errands that you thought you were getting rid of but then it comes right back. The best way to lift your mood is to go through the process of that task and completing it because in the end you’ll be satisfied. I find task very stressful because it puts a lot of pressure also depending on the time you have it makes setbacks for other stuff and you want to do. Task can be very difficult because the time spent on an unfinished task is lost time and it could be spent on other things. Simply acting more energetic can be extremely effective. In the research that Rubin has read it shows that when people move faster their metabolism speeds up. Also, the way we act is because the way we feel. Sometimes when I feel lazy and have something to do, I act energetic that way I can get up and do that task.

There may be people that think differently on the things that Rubin has mention in her novel. People can be happy with 5-6 hours of sleep because they pushed themselves or they’re use to the certain number of hours they sleep. Other people can still feel happy without the need to exercise. They might say that exercising makes them unhappy or that they feel happy not exercising. People might think that people who collect stuff like antiques, games, toys or other collectables might see it as clutter but to those who collect that type of clutter makes them feel happy with their clutter. It all depends on the opinion of that person on how they define happiness ifs through sleeping, exercising, clutter, organizing and feeling energetic.
