Why have you selected the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Nursing for graduate studies in nursing and how did you hear about our school?
I have always been curious and interested in studying Palliative Care. So, when I searched the internet, I was full of hope that I would be able to find a great program from a reputable institution. And true indeed, I discovered that the University of Alabama offers an online program for Palliative Care Nurse Practitioner.
I know that UAB is a world-renowned university with great health care facilities. It is a leader in the fields of teaching, research, health care, and community service. This is evident in their progressive curriculum related to palliative care in the nursing graduate studies. Not only that, I have friends and family in Birmingham too and they speak highly of the services and facilities of this university.
With those positive feedbacks and a well crafted program online, who wouldn’t want to enroll in this school?

I have long felt the need for palliative care, not just for patients with cancer, but for all types of diseases. For many years, I have been advocating for palliative care and have been vocal for its integration into the institution’s programs. It brings me great joy to be part of this kind of development in the field of healthcare.
I have witness patients dying and how families bereaved and I have never shunned away from these situations. Instead, I have been drawn to them because of my desire to preserve both patients and their families. I believe one of the most important aspects of nursing care is to be empathetic with them, give them the dignity they deserve and allow them to decide the kind of care they want.
Being part of your online program is exciting and rewarding and I believe I can be a great resource for this with my background and experience in the clinical and administrative departments. My career experiences from the early days as a secretary to a nurse in the Emergency Department, Pediatric ICU, Pediatric Trauma, and now administrating the Adult and Pediatric Trauma Services at a Level 1 Trauma Center has afforded me wonderful opportunities and experiences.
Pursuing a clinical degree has always been my dream as I want to have a closer connection with patients and their families. I want something that is not just a “degree” but something that would help me fulfill my calling. I have always dream to work in palliative care, but life’s circumstances prevented me from moving forward to this until recently. I have always loved my career in nursing, and I have been able to pursue many aspects of nursing through bedside care, program development and administration.
Another thing that interests me is that through your program, we will receive a Nurse Practitioner degree with family practice. This will allow me to perform the mission work that I have long desired to do in underdeveloped countries as our institution have a strong mission program and they are always in need of nurse practitioners to accompany the team.
On a personal note I have experienced the power of palliative care, when my Mother was a patient in a well developed system. I can never express the gratitude I have for this service and I know without a doubt that I want to be part of that in my nursing career.
I want to be a full time student at UAB. I am fortunate that an institution that supports my career of choice could also afford to pay my tuition fees. I have also made arrangements through our Palliative Care Program and Advanced Practice Nurse Department to perform any clinical requirements. We have multiple opportunities in various areas for clinical experience.
I hope UAB would give me a chance to start my journey towards fulfilling my dream. In return, I assure you that I would be doing my best to excel academically and prove that you will not regret accepting me to this program.
