A Critique of Temptation Confessions of a Marriage Counselor, a Movie by Tyler Perry

Table of Content

Temptation, a powerful urge or desire for something, is a universal experience resulting from our inherent imperfection and longing for what we lack. How individuals handle these cravings reveals their true character. It is our responsibility to make mindful choices that serve our best interests, despite facing temptations. A friend recommended the 2013 film “Temptation: Confessions of a Marriage Counselor,” written and directed by Tyler Perry, which tells the story of Judith, a woman married to Brice who starts experiencing these desires. Despite being content in her marriage and life, she suddenly yearns for more. Initially delaying watching the movie, I am now grateful that I did because it not only captivated me but also conveyed a significant message about the potential consequences of succumbing to temptations. The film showcases how allowing our temptations to control us can lead to severe downfall as depicted dramatically in this movie’s plotline. At first glance, Judith and Brice appear to be an ideal couple deeply in love since their teenage years leading comfortable middle-class lives; Judith works as a therapist while Brice is employed as a pharmacist. However, beneath the facade of an idyllic existence, we catch glimpses of Judith’s unfulfilled desires. She longs for her own business and a stronger sense of satisfaction in her life.

One day at work, Judith encounters a man named Harley. He possesses immense wealth, striking looks, and remarkable success, seemingly having it all. Initially unfazed by Harley, Judith is aware of her devoted husband and recognizes the need to avoid any temptation.
However, Harley persistently taunts Judith, belittling her marriage as mundane and promising to fulfill all her desires. Gradually, Judith acknowledges her growing discontentment despite loving her husband. She embarks on an affair with Harley, who indulges her with extravagant trips, jewelry, clothes, and everything she craves. While Judith believes she has found happiness, it is in fact her desires overpowering her, leading to inevitable consequences.
As time passes, Harley demands that she abandon her husband for him, but she is reluctant. Eventually, her husband discovers the affair and they argue bitterly until Judith decides to leave him for Harley. However, the situation takes a dramatic turn as Harley becomes increasingly aggressive towards her, especially upon learning of her intention to leave him. In a harrowing instance of violence, Brice intervenes and saves Judith’s life by demanding that Harley cease his assault.
Later that day, Judith receives the devastating news that she has contracted HIV from her affair with Harley. Despite his outward perfection, Harley proves to be anything but, subjecting her to abuse, exposing her to a life-threatening disease, and ultimately ending her marriage. Judith confronts numerous setbacks due to an inability to resist temptation and cherish what she already had.If we consistently allow our temptations to control us, it will ultimately result in our downfall. Tyler Perry portrayed a regular marriage in a way that could apply to anyone who fails to be conscious of their choices. The film served as a reminder that our self-centered urges have the potential to bring about catastrophic consequences.

Despite the potential lack of extreme outcomes depicted in the movie, it effectively conveys the idea that our temptations can lead to pain. The film carries numerous meaningful messages for viewers to interpret. It raises awareness about the dangers associated with relationships involving infidelity and domestic abuse. Additionally, it explores the impact of HIV and the risks of contracting it unknowingly. Judith, the protagonist, led a relatively ordinary life with a decent husband, but her desire for more ultimately led to her downfall through infidelity. The movie emphasizes that our rebellious choices can come at a high cost, as exemplified throughout the storyline. Judith also experiences domestic violence from her lover, which is never acceptable. It highlights the importance of promptly leaving abusive relationships, which Judith does. Furthermore, the plot takes a more dramatic turn when Judith contracts HIV without realizing that she was involved with an infected person. Although the character made mistakes, such instances are illegal and should not occur as frequently. It is commendable how Tyler Perry addresses these themes in his films since they reflect real-life circumstances that necessitate caution in choosing our partners. In an interview discussing the movie, Tyler Perry emphasizes the significance of its message about making wrong choices and their potential to alter one’s entire life. Perry consistently incorporates impactful messages into his movies, shedding light on issues prevalent in society. He emphasizes the issue of domestic violence and acknowledges its prevalence, but emphasizes the importance of taking action to prevent and put an end to it.

This movie delivers various messages about the negative consequences of certain impulses. Despite its melodramatic nature, many agree that it has a solid storyline, albeit overly dramatic. According to Common Sense Media, the film can be described as “A soapy melodrama that has mixed messages about love and marriage” (Angulo). Another critic from Entertainment Weekly adds, “The third act brings some unexpected twists to Perry’s average melodrama, injecting a dose of soap-opera excitement. However, the constant moralizing becomes tiresome eventually” (Nashawaty). Both reviewers classify the movie as a melodrama and criticize its complexity or confusion. While some may find it excessively dramatic, the movie still presents an essential storyline for viewers to understand. Its purpose is to inspire people towards better choices in life. The way in which this message is portrayed is not as crucial as ensuring its reception and comprehension.
