A First-Year Nursing Student at ECPI University

Table of Content

My name is Corey Mays; I am a first-year nursing student at ECPI University (Columbia campus). I have an Associate in Science degree from (CPCC) Central Piedmont Community College in Charlotte, NC. I am a licensed Cosmetologist in SC and NC; I worked as a national educator for Bronner Brothers haircare product company in Atlanta, Ga. for several years teaching hairstylists and barbers around the country. After teaching and traveling extensively I decided to change careers. I fell in love with the healthcare field, became licensed in SC and NC as a (CNA) Certified Nursing Assistant. The very next year my Grandparents took seriously ill and needed full-time care. I moved back to SC from Charlotte to be a live-in caregiver for my grandparents fulltime. My grandmother had both her legs amputated, as a result of poor circulation from diabetes; I learned wound care as a result. I gained real word experience caring for my grandparents. After their passing, I worked in a pool for Richland Memorial Hospital and South Carolina State Mental Health facilities in Columbia. Later, I moved to Charlotte where I worked in a long-term care facility and Golden Living Rehabilitation Center of Charlotte, NC while earning my A.S. degree. Making the decision to become a nurse was an easy choice after becoming a CNA, and I am excited to start my new journey.

First, I plan be an asset to the nursing field due to my overwhelming compassionate nature to care for everyone. Secondly, I have a passion for science, reading, and learning. My grandmother passed away in my arms, and my grandfather passed away while I was holding his hand. In a manner of speaking I gained hospice experience which deepened my level of compassion. Lastly, I love to problem solve and work as a team, while working together towards a positive outcome. I believe nurses are a prime example of the art of teamwork. Nurses working cohesively and efficiently make a successful and stellar hospital and/or medical center. I would like to obtain my LPN license from ECPI University Columbia, then transfer to ECPI Charlotte to get my RN License. I also plan to work towards my Master of Science degree in Nursing. Ultimately, I plan to go as far as I can educationally.
