Advantages and Disadvantages of Having Working Mothers

Table of Content

Ever since the time period Before Christ, men have been the dominant ones among the two genders, being the household leaders and source of income to the family. On the other hand, women were traditionally required by society to stay at home to manage household chores, look after the children, and be submissive and supportive of their husbands.

However in our contemporary world, the way society works has undergone a major change with the result of us seeing women becoming successful entrepreneurs, popular pop stars and high ranking government officials. With modern women now being equal and having roles that were traditionally dominated by men, the question is what exactly are the advantages and disadvantages of having working mothers? Firstly, working mothers will help to increase the household income, which means a better standard of living for the family.

With a higher income for the household, the family will achieve financial stability more easily and thus not face problems of not able to feed the family, not able to afford basic necessities, not able to put the children through education until university stage and not able to afford entertainments like the television for the family to enjoy. Hence, working mothers help to generate additional income which is beneficial to the family. Secondly, working mothers get to put their education and talents to practical use in their works.

This not only means that their talents and the years of education they painstakingly went through are not put to waste, but this also contributes positively to the country’s economy and ensures that the money spent by the government for their education are not down the drain. With more of these high-class working mothers in the society, there will be more highly educated people contributing to the society and the society will also become more civilised.

People will not have to pay more taxes and the industrial productivity of that particular country will also increase. Hence working mothers get to use their talents and education to practically contribute to society in terms of economy and development. However, there are arguments that with mothers working, there will be no one at home to manage the household chores and take care of the children. This means a caretaker will have to be employed to do the job which will costs valuable money, especially if the income of the household is not very high.

Furthermore, if the husband is chosen for the traditional woman job, this will shatter the public image and ego of the man, especially when society will look down on him for being a man with no career and has to live off a woman. It will also be utterly disgraceful for him especially when his male friends are all sole bread winners, having wonderful careers, being officially the heads of their households, having submissive wives who have to listen to them, having high self-esteem and high social status while he is a man that stays at home to do traditional woman house chores and look after the children.

Hence, having working mothers might not be beneficial to the family. Furthermore, it will also be quite stressful for working mothers who decide to include the job of being a housewife in their already busy life. It will definitely prove to be a tough challenge for the mothers who will have to try to balance their work and household lives. This means they will have more responsibilities to handle such as having to undertake an important work project and striving for promotion with the promise of a higher salary while struggling to perform household chores and do the hard work of taking care of the children.

If the working mothers prove unsuccessful in coping with their double jobs, they might suffer from physiological problems due to their exposure to too much stress. Hence, working mothers who try to be housewives at the same time might suffer from negative consequences. Having working mothers has its advantages and disadvantages. Its advantages include working mothers contributing to the household income and having the opportunity of using their talents and education at work, which contributes positively to the society.

Its disadvantages include not having the working mothers as housewives, which results in the loss of valuable money from hiring caretakers and how the husbands will be affected negatively if they were to take on the traditional woman job. Working mothers will suffer from generous amount of stress if they try to be workers and housewives at the same time and if they fail, they might suffer from physiological problems.
