The New York Times could have highlighted individuals who were either immigrants or from immigrant backgrounds and had knowledge of the difficulties associated with relocating to a new nation. The United States has traditionally been viewed as a land of opportunities, where hard work could transform aspirations into reality, even for those less fortunate who could attain financial stability. Nevertheless, Suzuki Skim’s migration to the United States appeared regressive rather than progressive. Skim’s mother, once regarded as an esteemed figure in South Korea, was compelled to take on employment as a fish fillet worker at a market. Similarly, Skim’s father, previously owning multiple businesses, found himself destitute.
Skim’s experience in the “small world” became a distant memory as her perception and views were quickly changed by the society she lived in. The author’s depiction of her life was dramatically altered as she described her life in early 1980s Queens, New York. She compared her cramped and ugly home there to the beautiful mansion in South Korea she had grown accustomed to over thirteen years.
In Paragraph 3 of her essay, Kim provides a more detailed explanation of the contrast in lifestyles. She discusses how she used public transportation instead of being chauffeured to school, completed homework independently rather than receiving assistance, and noticed the absence of maids cleaning her house. Additionally, Kim reflects on how she was labeled as Asian rather than specifically Korean, which affected her identity. In Paragraph 5, Kim recounts the distinct differences in standards of respect between South Korean and American schools. She observes that teachers went unnoticed and walls were covered in graffiti.
Suzuki Kim faced a significant challenge in learning the English language, creating a wide gap between her and other Koreans in her ESL class. Despite being in the same class as other ESL students, Kim did not feel connected to them due to their impoverished backgrounds. Additionally, Kim belonged to the “1.5 generation,” with only a basic understanding of English and struggling to adopt American customs while still honoring Korean traditions. Notably, Kim’s English proficiency improved through various methods, including watching television without fully understanding it. While some may view Kim’s story as that of a privileged girl with an elitist attitude, I believe it represents the experiences of many immigrants in the United States.
Even individuals who are born in the same country can experience culture shock simply by crossing a border. The story conveyed a journey of self-discovery and acceptance as the protagonist adapted to a new nation. Despite the essay being replete with personal repulsion and bewilderment, Skim conveyed her experiences with intentionality, brevity, and directness. Although people face hardships during times of transition, home ultimately becomes what one creates, even if it does not resemble a “hilltop mansion with an orchard and a pond and peacocks”.
