Throughout history, rulers and dictators have sought to exert control over their subjects, treating them as subordinates and disregarding their rights. These oppressive leaders have compelled their citizens to perform degrading tasks, endure brutal assaults, and labor in unproductive fields. Despite claiming superiority, these beliefs are fundamentally flawed. All individuals should be treated fairly regardless of race, culture, gender, or religion since every person is inherently equal and possesses human rights that should be respected. In his article “Every Dictator’s Nightmare,” Wole Soyinka eloquently expresses these principles with impactful words. He examines the worsening conditions under tyrannical rule, specifically addressing instances of female slavery in Afghanistan and the infringement on religious freedoms.
. .wer-hungry, slave trading individuals filling the world with more sadness than we can fathom. If everyone acknowledged the concept that humans possess innate rights, they would understand their ability to create a better future for all by respecting these rights. They could enhance living conditions, fostering happiness and comfort for everyone, including themselves. However, instead of working towards this goal, people continue to struggle against oppression and bear the burden of tears caused by it. Many individuals still face the cruel reality of being sold into slavery for another’s pleasure. There are numerous workers who are unjustly or not paid at all for their labor. Unfortunately, unless we recognize and address this injustice, it will persist. Wole Soyinka’s words, “an idea that still lacks full realization,” hold immense truth regarding what we have yet to achieve.
