The biggest enemy of creativity in writing is perfectionism. We tend to sit and doubt our work. We think to ourselves, “Why would I want to read this? Why would someone else want to read this? This is so bad. I thought I was smarter or more creative than this.” Writers spend so much time preparing the perfect book. They get discouraged by these negative thoughts and put off their papers. Many never end up finishing or even publishing that book. We will never get anywhere if we strive to be perfect. Life isn’t perfect. There are many ways we can make writing more interesting and fun. Rather than just conveying boring information, we are more interested when we can express our own thoughts, feelings and emotions into our writing. Here are some tips that can help you awaken the inner writer in you.
First, you can try to carry a notebook everywhere you go and write down any ideas and observations you make throughout the day. Some of the most interesting and inspiring ideas come from other people and things around you. So, when you’re out there experiencing life, don’t be afraid to open your notebook and jot down that unusual phrase that was prompted by something you had seen or smelled on the bus or café. Another tip is finding out the time of day that you feel the most creative. Many writers feel that the morning time is best for them before all the craziness of the day begins. Others find it best for them when it is late at night after everyone has gone to bed. No matter what the time just make sure it’s a time you feel the most creative. Another great tip is to not agonize over making your paper perfect. It’s rare for a story, sentence or scene to come out perfect at the first go-around. Write your draft and leave. Go out, take a break or do anything that can help relax you and clear your thoughts. Then come back to your paper with a fresh mind. Also, don’t be afraid to ask for help. Having someone read your paper and giving feedback can help immensely when you’re having problems.
Lastly, the most important thing to do is to play with your writing and have fun! Sometimes we end up feeling that our writing is a chore and that it “must” be done. If we find that our plot is boring take a break and then work on something small, like modernist poetry. This type of poetry often makes very little sense, but it allows you to play with words in a way that the perfectionistic side of your brain won’t be able to stop.
In this exercise you will find that writing badly can actually create some very creative connections. You may find that your lines are embarrassing and horrible but you will also find some that are better than you expected. This exercise will help you to find that new level of creativity.
