Our God – God of Many Attributes

Table of Content

He is perfect in many ways, all of his infallible attributes prove this. In this report I will look at 3 of the many attributes of God, eternality, holiness, and love. God is eternal. Eternal means: without beginning or end, existing outside of time; lasting, timeless, endless. This means that God is infinite, he has no limitation of time. God’s Eternality is proven in Exodus 3:14, “… I am who I am.” This reference is God describing himself as limitless, by saying “I am” He is meaning was and always will be. Another reference which proves God’s Eternality is Psalm 90:2, “Before the mountains were brought forth, Or ever You had formed the earth and world, Even from everlasting to everlasting, You are God.” Eternality is proved throughout the Bible, God shows us his timelessness in that the torments of the lost are forever and the rewards of the saved are forever. God’s eternality is Practical to us because it proves we are eternally saved, that God will always be there for us, and that his rules for our life are timeless and do not become outdated- because God never becomes outdated. Our lives should be lived with eternity in our focus, because that is what will really matter in the scheme of things. Through Christ we are eternal creatures.

One of God’s most prominent attributes is His holiness. Holiness is a moral attribute, unlike the natural attributes, eternality, omnipotence, omniscience, and omnipresence. Holiness is honored above all other attributes. It is proven in Isaiah 6:3, “And one cried to another and said: Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts ; The whole earth is full of His glory!” and in Revelation 4:8b, “Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, Who was and is to come!” The Lord is declared holy, not one time, but three times. This is the only attribute that is repeated three times, making it a more honored attribute, then any other. Holiness means: divine power, sacred; revered. Holiness is sinless perfection. We are called by God to be holy, or at least to strive for it. God has commanded this of us, in 1 Peter 1:15-16, “…Be holy for I am holy.”

“God is love” . This is something we hear all of our lives, but rarely think about the complexity of His love. God’s love is so immeasurable to our minds, it is impossible to think about the severity of it all. The complexity of God’s love is proven throughout His Word, the Bible, but it can be simple stated that: God knows everything about us, all our sins, thoughts, etc. And he STILL loves us. That is some kind of love, one that is limitless and unrestrictive. The love that we are capable of is full of boundaries, restrictions, and conditions. We are instructed to love one another, “love your neighbor as yourself.”, “…love your enemies…”, “…love one another…”, and “love one another, as I have loved you”. We share so many forms of love in our lives, but, we should set apart our love for God, and strive to give him the perfect, unconditional love that God gives us.

Throughout all of these attributes, God has proven to be almighty. Each one of these little characteristics adds up to the great being that He is, one that is eternal, holy, and loving. Learning about God’s attributes helps us to know Him better, and therefore love him, worship Him, and adore Him for the One he is.
