The Grammar Translation Method, also known as ‘The Classical Method,’ focuses on teaching rather than communication. C. Orrieux states that GTM is primarily used for teaching Latin and Ancient Greek, which are considered “dead languages.” He explains that GTM emphasizes grammar training, which is essential for developing mental agility in higher education. The objective of teaching these languages is not to promote communicative speaking skills but rather to foster logical thinking and the ability to read written texts in these languages.

The students at GTM learn the target language through a passive method that involves translating between their mother tongue and the target language. Both languages are considered important for learners, who read and translate literature texts from the target language into their native language. The main focus of the courses is to improve reading and writing skills, with speaking and listening being given less priority. Vocabulary is memorized and grammar is taught deductively. In this approach, the teacher is actively involved while the students play a passive role. Consequently, this passivity extends to the learners’ participation in society.

The Grammar Translation Method (GTM) employs various techniques, including translation of literary passages, usage of antonyms/synonyms, filling in the blanks with words in sentences, and writing compositions. However, this method may lead to a tedious learning experience and does not engage students in any particular area. Originally designed for studying “dead” languages and accessing classical literature, GTM is not suitable for teaching English, which is a vibrant and widely spoken language. Therefore, teachers need to be cautious and consider alternative approaches when teaching English.
