Background of the Study The group conducted this study because we want to prove that Lanzones peelings have its important use. The team sees its possible use in order for us to make another useful thing just like our product, a mosquito coil (katol). As we all know, a katol is always used as a mosquito repellant. Hence, the committee aims to prove that Lanzones pelings are also capable of being used as an ingredient to create an effective mosquito repellant.

Irritated with mosquito outbreaks during the rainy season? Our group is here to show you that there’s another way to drive away these pests, in a way that doesn’t add to environmental pollution. After conducting research on lanzones, our group found out that peelings from the said fruit contain triterpenes that can repel mosquitoes. Hence, we developed the idea of producing a mosquito coil out of lanzones peelings. This project can be beneficial in different ways. Not only does it help get rid of mosquitoes, but also is affordable and easy to make. B. Statement of the Problem • Is it possible to create a mosquito coil, or katol, made out of lanzones peelings? • Would it be effective as much as its counterpart of the commercial katol? • Would the way on how the katol is made affect its properties and use? • Does lanzones peelings have specific properties that suits it for making it into a katol? • What would be the effect on the user’s health? C. Objectives This project aims to: • make a mosquito coil out of lanzones peelings,

• make an organic, chemical-free mosquito coil,
• produce a useful product using biodegradable waste,
• test the feasibility of a lanzones-based mosquito coil and

• develop the value of resourcefulness and make an effective mosquito coil with less cost. D. Significance of the Study E. Scope and Limitations of the Study The Philippines, as we all know, is a tropical country. People might experience the scorching heat of the sun or heavy rains. And nowadays, we experience both interchanging in everyday life. The change of weather might affect our health and the behavior of the things around us. More likely, due to excessive heavy rainfalls, there had been causes where stagnant water rests.

One thing that will surely be attracted by the stagnant waters is insects specifically the mosquitoes. The mosquitoes are very likely to carry dreadful germs and viruses that may be transmitted when we are bitten. The group’s project then comes in, the katol (mosquito killer) out of lanzones peelings which many can benefit from it.

The Group 4 – Lavoisierians’ product would be highly beneficial to them for the prices of our basic necessities are gradually increasing, therefore we need to improvise on some certain products we use in our everyday life. The aspects of the topic that were covered in our study are the other benefits or uses of lanzones. It shows if we can make katol out of lanzones and if it is capable of being an insecticide. The group will have this kind of study for the whole academic year. Also, the group will budget the time for the whole year to finish and to have a successful outcome. The extent of our study is to know how lanzones can be made as katol. We only have this kind of study just for academic purposes. The group 4 conducted this so that we may learn enough knowledge that can help us in our daily lives. The only risk here is that we should know the scope of our time because considering it contains a biodegradable waste (lanzones peelings) it can be easily be rotten. C. Hypothesis B. Conceptual Framework A. Related Studies Chapter II – Review of Related Literature Mosquito coil is mosquito-repelling incense, usually shaped into a spiral and typically made from dried paste of pyrethrum powder. The coil is usually held at the center of the spiral, suspending it in the air, or wedged by two pieces of fireproof nettings to allow continuous smoldering. Burning usually begins at the outer end of the spiral and progresses slowly toward the centre of the spiral, producing a mosquito-repellent smoke. Lanzones is a medium-sized, single-trunked tree that usually grows from ten to fifteen meters tall. Lansium domesticum (lanzones) is currently classified in within the family of Meliaceae. Fruits are ovoid, roundish orbs around five centimeters in diameter, usually found in clusters of two to thirty fruits along the branches and trunk. It grows and is sold in bunches that resemble grapes. Each round fruit is covered by
yellowish, thick, leathery skin. The sweet juicy flesh contains sucrose, fructose, and glucose. The fruit peel of Lansium domesticum, var. pubescenes (thicker than one of the sweeter var. domesticum) exudes a white sap/latex containing mosquito repelling triterpenes (lansionic acid p.e.). The dried peel is burned and produces an aromatic, white smoke (white from the sap and some remaining water). According to what we have researched the peelings of lanzones have this aromatic smell that drives away and kills, mosquito, the smoke of this repellant for the smoke is a good agent in making mosquito repellant. This may be a cheap alternative to de-fogging and fumigation against dengue-carrying, diurnal mosquitoes and malaria-carrying, nocturnal anopheles. Another alternative would be ipil ipil. The group chose it because according to research, the skin of lanzones has a certain compound that can repel mosquitos. When burned, it also produces an aromatic smell which is soothing and relaxing. This ingredient can also be burned easily. It is perfect for the production of katol, a coil of incense used to kill and repel mosquitoes here in the Philippines. It is more effective when lanzones peelings are dried first under the sun so it will be more combustible. When combined with starch, the group will be able to produce a mosquito coil quite similar to those on the market. Natural compounds that repel mosquitoes are produced by Lanzones peelings and when combined with starch will produce a mosquito coil raw materials It is possible to create a mosquito coil out of lanzones peelings because its skin has a certain compound which is the white sap that contains triterpenes, a mosquito repelling acid. And just like its commercial counterpart, based on our research, when it is burned it releases an aromatic smell that has an effect to the user which is very relaxing and soothing. And it also lasts long just like its commercial counterpart’s qualities. The way of producing it will be affecting its properties and use but in a very good way. In order to produce a better mosquito coil out of lanzones peelings, it must be dried first under the sun so it would be more combustible during the use. Chapter III Methodology 1.Make sure the lanzones peelings were sun dried for a few
days. 2.When fully dried, pulverize using a mortar and pestle.

3.Mix an equal amount of starch and pulverized lanzones peelings. 4.Add water to make a paste-like consistency. Mix thoroughly. 5.Now get the commercial mosquito coil and with the foil, make a mold. 6.Pour the mixed starch and lanzones into the mold and let the mixture dry. You now have a mosquito coil. * If your katol does not burn properly you could increase the ratio of pulverized lanzones B. Procedure A. Materials Methodology C & D • Starch • aluminum foil

• sun dried lanzones peelings
• commercial mosquito coil
• mortar and pestle
• basin/containers
• food coloring (optional) The plan revolves around the lanzones peelings, believed to contain sap/latex that can kill insects, and how our group will manipulate them to successfully make mosquito coils.

The experimental variables are the variables that change, while the controlled variables are the variables being controlled in an experiment.

In the experiment we conducted, we wanted to know if the granularity of the pulverized lanzones peelings would affect the effectivity of the mosquito coil. We had questions like, “What if the peelings were not finely pounded, leaving big and inconsistent particles?” and “Would the pulverized lanzones affect the texture of the mosquito coil?” Therefore, this is our experimental variable. The sample we worked mostly with is the lanzones peelings. It is said that lanzones peelings have properties that help repel mosquitoes, making it suitable to make as mosquito coil. The lanzones peelings, when dried under the sun, turned from light brown into dark brown in color. It also turned crispy, making it easier to pulverize. We collected the data through searching in different references like books and internet. We organize them by the data we collected, like what are the right tools or ingredients to be use in the experiment proper. And we record it by following the procedure exactly the way it was written. There are a lot of
ways to interpret the data. We analyzed and interpreted the data through useful and thorough reading to understand it. Once we understood and interpreted it, we used our heads talked about the factors that should be taken notice of, like the quantity, the quality, and the like. We were able to connect the dots and produce useful information that can help us in conducting the experiment. I know through the gathered, analyzed and interpreted data, we can give the best results and make this experiment happen. Cornstarch was used to make the consistency of the paste thicker. Its color is white and when mixed with pulverized peelings, that color disappears and it makes the paste thick. We gathered the materials by assigning it among the members. The lanzones was brought by two volunteer members and the others paid for the expenses. The other materials were assigned by the leader of the group for the members to bring. Chapter IV Results and Discussions The group presented the data very bluntly, using the information that we got from our sources. Group 4 presented it as simple as we can so that everyone will understand the data. The team also did not use any graphics like tables, graphs or diagrams instead the group just used the very basic form of presenting the data, which is the paragraph form. Our experiment resulted in a mosquito coil that is made from lanzones peelings which turns out to be successful. The group didn’t have major difficulties that can hinder us in making our study. Group 4 considered different factors which helped us to achieve our standards in making this project. Chapter V Summary and Conclusions (cc) photo by medhead on Flickr The group got the lanzones peelings during its season for a much affordable price of the lanzones for the mosquito coil. Group 4 is trying to prove to everybody that we could use the peelings of lanzones which is usually thrown as an alternative for mosquito coil. The lanzones paste turned out well. As for the coil itself, it is still in the process of drying up. Every step was certainly followed. Group 4 Lavoisierians can now conclude that the there is really ways on how to not waste fruit peeling like that of lanzones. Also, it can be possible to make an organic, chemical-free mosquito coil and produce a useful product from biodegradable waste. This definitely developed in us the value of resourcefulness. The advantage of having findings is that we could easily see the results if whether it has been what it should be from what we expected or not. It also compares the results of the experiment
from the other experiments done with the same procedure. To God be the Glory! Recommendations Acknowledgements Bibliography Our katol made from lanzones peelings lets you drive away mosquitoes and other insects, in a way that doesn’t add to environmental pollution. It doesn’t need special equipment to use it other than just lighting it up and it is portable and can fit into small houses. I recommend this product to everyone not only because it’s environmental friendly but also cheaper and easy to make than other katol brands.

The group learned that the lanzones dried peelings could be an alternative as a mosquito coil. It is safer to use than the commercialized one since we didn’t use any hazardous chemical in our mosquito coil. The cornstarch made the mixture thick, so we advice that they need to be careful when adding it already so that it will surely become a paste, not too much but not too little. The lanzones peeling were placed under the sun longer so that it would be crispy enough by the time we are going to do the experiment. The team recommends this experiment to the other students for it is fun to do and they would learn a lot. The group’s Katol out of Lanzones Peelings would not be successful without the help of the following sources:

http://www.freepatentsonline.com
http://www.wikipedia.org
http://www.scribd.com After the long run of making the research study, finally, the researchers finished their experiment. It is because of the persons who guided and helped the researchers during the procedure. We wouldn’t have done this without their help. The experiment is the result of the exerted effort of everybody in the group.

First and foremost, Group 4 would like to thank God our Father for guiding us and ensuring the safety of the people involved on this research. This project is dedicated to the Almighty for always being there. The group also acknowledes the Timbre family for the help and support, especially for allowing the researchers to use their house as a venue for the research study.
