My Holy War by Jonathan Raban Analysis

  1. Rabon’s tone towards the church was that of the church full of hypocrites with most of its followers not really believing only attending as part of a social gathering, Rabon also stated how the church delivers a message of peace, however, it is responsible for many of the most violent acts in history, the Spanish inquisition, and the Salem witch trials for example. As for his father, Rabon thought he was lost in old religion he had no reality of the thoughts and visions of the young.Rabon impression of Qutb was that of a paranoid man who thought the American Government was out to change his ideals; however, respected Qutb’s zealousness towards his beliefs. You can distinguish what he really believes toward the church in England during his youth, and the current state of the Muslim radical terrorist.
  2. Rabon impression of terrorist were citizens with the acute ability to blend into the mainstream, they are intelligent and knowledgeable regarding the world around them. He lets the reader know that they can be your neighbor, friend, brother or son.
  3. Rabon shifts to the second person in describing the early experiences of Qutb at this initial arrival in America. He also applies the second person regarding 911 terrorist leader Muhammad Atta’s experiences in Hamburg relating to his abomination for the American skyscraper and his opinion of the Western world’s destruction of Aleppo.
  4. Rabon is attempting to show the reader that prosecuting John Walker is not going to help put and end to terrorism. In his opinion many John Walker’s exist and they should be studied not incarcerated. He states that the clever and unhappy are usually more easily inclined to devote to a cause such as terrorism.
  5. Rabon thought that people serving God now are not serving the creator but themselves, seeking social approval. He did not believe the faith was strong enough in any believer to lose his life in the name of his religion. The term grotesque is an overstatement, however, the possibility exist in my opinion for anyone in America to have faith this strong. The state of religion in America proves this, the benefits President Bush received during his election proves it’s wide ranging strength. Rabon cause against nuclear disarmaments looks more of that of rebellion against his father than a belief for this cause.
  6. Qutb’s milestones, (1964) believed that Western Civilization with its drinking, fornication, shopping and vulgar entertainment is ruining the world. His mission was to rally Muslims to save themselves from the dedicatance of the Western world. These ideologies continue to exist in many Americans today, from the moral majority, to the Fundamental Christian movement, they elect our leaders to change American laws to conform to their political agendas.
  7. Rabon writes that the Koran describes the hereinafter as “Gardens of Bliss nothing so much as the great Playboy Mansion in the sky.” Rabon saw a majority of the recruits to terrorism as repressed and awkward, displeased with life, willing to die, if they view this “Garden of Bliss” awaits in the afterworld. This attraction is created in the Muslim faith with beliefs of the reward of paradise for the giving of life for Allah. For a lonely misinformed young man or women displeased with life, this sense of euphoria will exist; this gives the ‘erotic allure’ of death especially during what you believe to be a jihad.
  8. I agree with this matter although you look at the Taliban their beliefs are  medieval, but as Rabon states the first causalities of this war were students, who family members never believed they could resort to suicide in the name of religion. These were young men, you would find in Starbucks, drinking Heineken and Budweiser wearing Tommy Hilfiger. Looking at the modern communication by Osama Bin Laden his messages against the American government are broadcast through video Al Jazeera. This is not a medieval enemy; they are very sophisticated with money and technology at their disposal.
