For my senior project I was determined to do something that would help others out and be a help to me also, so I wanted to do a blood drive. I decided to do a blood drive because I was in Allied Health classes, and I figured that would be the perfect opportunity to get my senior project done. My allied health teacher and my advisor, Brandi Mellott helped me set up a meeting with the Red Cross. During that time we set a date and got all the information to do the drive. A few days later a friend and I put up posters around McConnellsburg High School.
We had people come in and ask questions immediately after, excited and eager to know what they have to do to be able to give blood. We started to sign people up the next day. Our goal was to get thirty people to sign up. When done signing up we had exactly thirty people, we were very thrilled to have met our goal. Subsequent to signing people up, I called Lincoln Way Pizza, and told them that I was hosting a blood drive, and was wanting to get pizza donated to the volonteers. They were very kind and were pleased to help me out.
On Friday, December 5th, 2008, I got to the school around 6:30 a. m eager to start my day. The Blood mobile and its Team arrived around 7:30. We started to unload the truck soon after, setting all the equipment up in the schools gym. In that time I had a chance to talk to the members of the Red Cross and I found myself thankfull for how kind and polite they were. The blood drive started around 9 a. m and shortly before our pizza was delivered. Everything seemed to be going very well and as planned. We were having fun, and doing something great for the Community.
My job during the drive was to walk the donors back to a mat and give them something to eat and drink so they didn’t pass out. I kept a close eye on them until they were feeling okay enough to go back to class. Most of the students in my class had a important job in the drive. I’m glad everyone helped out. The blood drive was over around 2 p. m. Although I didn’t want it to be over, we helped pack everything up and said our “thank yous. ” When all done, out of our thirty blood donors, we had twenty two total presenting donors. Out of the twenty two donors, we had fourteen first time donors participate.
