“NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital, based in New York City, is the nation’s largest not-for-profit, non-sectarian hospital, with 2,242 beds” ( “New York-Presbyterian Hospital Uses Eclipsys”, 2009).The hospital provides state-of-the-art inpatient, outpatient, ambulatory and preventive care in all areas of medicine. New York Presbyterian is the number one hospital in New York and is consistently ranked among the best academic medical institutions in the nation. “New York-Presbyterian Hospitals was founded in 1998 after a merger between The New York Hospital and The Presbyterian Hospital, which were founded in 1771 and 1868, respectively” ( New York-Presbyterian Hospital-Columbia and Cornell).

According to its detailed methodology report, the U.S. News & World Report’s ranking places much more weight on hospitals’ performance in specialties and on serious or complex medical procedures than on care for chronically ill patients, the population that makes up the bulk of hospitalizations. Of the 448 total points a hospital can get toward its total “Honor Roll” score, 340 points come from specialty scores. Within the specialty scores, only outcomes from “challenging or critical” procedures are included” (Brownlee & Garber, 2017). Presbyterian Hospital works and is collaborated with two of top ranking colleges in the United States. Columbia is nationally ranked with three and is ranked six in best value schools (Columbia University, 2018). According to the U.S. News Research, in 2015, Weill Cornell Medical College was nationally ranked number 15 of the best colleges. New York-Presbyterian Hospital began their Six Sigma initiative in 2003 and their Performance of Excellence program is dedicated to improving quality, efficiency and service through the execution of Six Sigma and Design for Six Sigma. During their first year, New York Presbyterian has completed 130 Six Sigma projects and saw over fifty million dollars in savings. “They have trained 50 Black Belts, 300 Green Belts, and 4 Master Black Belts” ( Marx, 2018). New York Presbyterian saw a six to one return on investment during its first year. The hospital has made impressive improvements in clinical, operational, and service excellence using the Six Sigma program.
Hospital Specific Outcomes and Safety Rating
New York Presbyterian is one of the nation’s most comprehensive, integrated academic healthcare delivery systems, whose organizations are dedicated to providing the highest quality, most compassionate care and service to patients(New York Presbyterian Hospital, 2017). A survey from the United States News, they were recently ranked the top in nation for children’s care in every specialty, which includes cancer and diabetes. Surprisingly, they are the only hospital in the nation with statistically better mortality rates in all of the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services 30-Day mortality measures. The hospital’s collaboration with the two ivy league colleges, Weill Cornell Medical College and Columbia University, helps to fuel innovation and research, which helps ensure patients that they are getting world-class care, and have the best possible outcomes for patients in a setting in which they can train outstanding young physicians for the future. In patient safety ranking, the hospital scores below average. On the other hand, when it comes to lung cancer surgery and chronic obtrusive pulmonary disease they score high performing in those categories. The rankings for advance technologies, nurse staffing and patient services are all excellent.
In conclusion, New York- Presbyterian Hospital is the top ranking hospital in the United States. They are ranked number one in New York metropolitan area and rank six in the nation. The hospital is included in the prestigious Honor Roll. They treat their patients with dignity and respect and they provide world class care. It is a teaching and they are collaborated with Columbia University and Weill Cornell College of Medicine.
