Pablo R. Picasso is widely considered the foremost figure in 20th-century art because of his extraordinary technical ability, extensive scope, unparalleled creativity, and prolific productivity.
Pablo Picasso was born in Malaga, a city in southern Spain, on October 25, 1881, at 11:15 P.M. Despite facing a precarious birth situation where he almost did not survive, his uncle Dr. Salvador Ruiz saved his life by blowing cigar smoke into his face to help him breathe for the first time. This incident became Picasso’s initial victory over death. His parents were Jose Ruiz Blasco, an art teacher, and Maria Picasso y Lopez.
Picasso, who was considered a genius from a young age, struggled academically and showed little interest in math. Instead, he would draw during class and had a short attention span, leading to the belief that he had dyslexia. In 1895, the family moved to La Coruna when a professor at the School of Fine Arts in Barcelona offered to trade positions with Picasso’s father. Once settled, his father arranged for him to study art by persuading school officials to allow him to take the exam for advanced classes. The exam required two charcoal drawings of models. Picasso’s uncle paid models to pose for him so that he could paint realistically, and he completed his drawings much faster than his peers. Impressed, the jury immediately admitted him to the school and he was awarded a gold medal for his extremely realistic painting titled “Science and Charity.” In 1897, Picasso passed the entrance exam at the Royal Academy of San Fernando in Madrid. Known as one of the most prolific artists in history, Picasso has excelled in various mediums including painting, drawing, sculpture, graphics, and ceramics.His influence can be seen in every medium he has worked with.
