Raphael was the most popular artist of all time, because he did many paintings of the school of Athens, and of Madonna, and also Jesus’s mother. He was also a famous architect. Raphael was an Italian painter, born April 6th, 1483 in Urbino, Italy. He died April 6th in Italy, Rome on his birthday after signing the lease to the palace he designed called Via Giulia, he was buried in the Pantheon. It all begun in 1490 when he was called by Pope Julius II to direct the decorations for the state rooms in the Vatican Palace.

He was the first superintendent of Antiquities in Rome. Raphael had many accomplishments “ Raphael painted the Madonna dell Granduca, The Small Cowper Madonna, and The Alba Madonna. He painted Stanza dell Incendio and the four large-scale paintings were Marriage of the Virgin, Sposalizio, The Crucified Christ with Virgin Mary and Saints and Angels. He painted a portrait of The Courtier and author Baldassare Castiglione in 1515. In the Vatican Palace the first room he completed was the so-called Stanza della Signatura (Room of the Signature).

In the Vatican Palace he had the opportunity to apply his classical art on a grand scale. ” Raphael was a hard worker, a genius among high renaissance painters. He influenced painters up to the 1900’s, and painted with emotional themes in which changed the way people thought of art. After completing the second room in the Vatican Palace in 1514 Raphael had a lot of demands. His assistants completed most of his work, however there were exceptions to that, like the Baldassacre Castiglione which was admired by artists since Raphael.

The full Renaissance was felt in France more than the surroundings of other European cities outside Italy. His art played a role in creating and strengthening political alliances by painting pictures with emotional themes and portraits which showed the political ruler. In his last years his work became more significant, like the Sicilia’s Spasimo which was a great painting. His mom died when he was 8 years old, his dad was Giovanni Santi who died when Raphael was 11. Giovanni Santi taught Raphael how to paint. He found n apprenticeship in Perugia, and later when he was 17 he was known as a “master painter” , he was great at painting portraits and many people respected him.

Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vince made an impression on him with their compositional techniques when he moved to Florence. He spent 12 years of his life in the service of the Vatican. He established a workshop with many assistants, who worked under supervision on most of his work. “Among Raphael’s greatest achievements are the frescoes in the pope’s apartments, painted in 1510 – 1511. He learned a lot by looking at what other artists of his time were doing. After the death of Pope Julius II in 1513 and Leo X accession, Raphael had many responsibilities and his greater influence. “a year later was appointed director of all the excavations of antiquities in and near Rome. Because of his many activities, only part of the third room of the Vatican Palace, the Stanza del Incendio (1514-1517), was painted by him, and he merely provided the designs for the fourth chamber, the Sala Constantina.

During this period he also designed ten tapestries illustrating the acts of Christ’s apostles for the Sistine Chapel; the cartoons, or drawings, for these are now in the Victoria and Albert Museum, London. Raphael also devised the architecture and decorations of the Chigi Chapel in the Church of Santa Maria del Popolo and the decorations of the Villa Farnesina, which include the Triumph of Galatea” His death shocked everyone, he was honored by a public funeral.

Raphael was a hard worker, many people loved him, he was highly respected during the Renaissance. He was an architect, and painter, but he was mostly known for his paintings. Raphael did many paintings like the Madonna. Raphael made positive changes, he was one of the greatest Renaissance painter ever. It’s now 491 years or more since he died and people still remember and respect him for all he did.
