Most people say that the power of destiny and dreams had a big impact on William Shakespearean “Romeo & Juliet” In “Romeo and Juliet”, Shakespeare looks into the theme of fate. For example, the opening lines of the play the audience is told what is going to happen to Romeo and Juliet. The chorus says “a pair of star-cross’s lovers take their life. ” in the prologue, before act l; lines 5-6. This quotation is the most important because it foreshadows the ending. “Star-cross’s” means lovers destined to an unhappy fate.
The prologue points out that they have fate against them and they are the children of feuding families. That being said, the lovers meeting was eventually going to happen. Shakespeare was trying to show that no matter what they did, everything would have a bad ending for them. As well as fate, Shakespeare explored the theme of dreams. To begin with, Mercuric Is telling Romeo about dreams. Only because Romeo has told Mercuric he has had a dream of Rosalie and himself. He has said that he does not want Romeo to believe in dreams because they are not real and for children.
He tells Romeo, that Queen MBA makes him see what he wants to see, therefore making his dream unreal. Romeo tells him that what he has said It nonsense. Mercuric then tells Romeo, “True, I talk of dreams; which are the children of an Idle brain, begot of nothing but vain fantasy; which Is as thin of substance as the air, and more Inconstant than the wind, who woos. Even now the frozen bosom of the North and, being angered, puffs away from thence, turning his side to the dew-dropping South. In act l, scene lb, lines 96-103. This quote matters because Mercuric says dreams are nothing but In the play, dreams are everything. He also states that dreams get you nowhere but In the story look at how Romeo and Gullet’s dreams foreshadowed their deaths. Shakespeare Is trying to show hat through this speech we begin to see that things aren’t the way they appear. Romeos love for Rosalie and his love for Juliet are more than Just the surface Infatuation they appear to be.
