The Downside of Free Education in America

Table of Content

The articleI chose to respond to is called “a more prosperous future” because I believe there is deeper levels of processing happening when determining the claim of free education. Where does this “free” form of education come from? What happens to the other college students
already enrolled in classes? Who is the one to decide if one is qualified for this so called free education? How will this dramatic change effect our economy? There are far more “what if” questions based on this claim.

Jill Biden and Eric Garcetti’s claim states that two years of free community college rests upon the questionable assumption that it will provide hardworking young Americans an affordable, quality education and safeguard our nations global competitiveness. Even President
Obama was trying to pass this claim because he saw the potential it brought to our nation. Personally I disagree with it because I think it will cause more damage to our economy than anything else we do.

For starters, nowadays the high school diploma is not enough to display your set of skills in the work environment you’d rather prefer. Studies have shown that “1l out of 15 growing occupations will require a postsecondary education”. These numbers are estimated to only grow bigger as the technology and the state of our economy grow larger. We as a population know right off the bat that nothing comes free without any consequences. Sure we could give those who can’t or are unable to afford college “free education” but where does that leave everyone else, in a bad spot.
Speaking for myselt, I just started college andI know it can be hard to keep up with money but there are many other ways to keep up. Like for instance my dad is in the military so I get his benefits with going to school, the VA is actually paying me for my education. That doesn’t stop there. I also have a part time job that fits with my school schedule, so it can be done, you just have to manage your time wisely. But speaking for the when the younger generation, if it ever so happens where their first two years is all paid for how will we catch up. I can’t begin to
imagine how our economy would stand that much debt.

That means all the prices would drastically increase. For example the prices for food would rise, the taxes would rise, the cost of basic living would rise, and there would be more demand for everything. I believe if we proceed with this claim we would be putting many families in deep water. By that I mean so many families are already living paycheck to paycheck trying to raise babies and what not trying to keep up with our economy today. It would be unfair to all those families and unfair to all us tax payers.
