The United States of America is often characterized or linked to being the greatest country in the world. Spellbound Americans habitually amplify diversity, opportunity, and freedom; these possibilities of progression are relevant, but equally appear in other sovereign countries. Most Americans do not magnify the man made defects associated with America. The underlying truth is that no country is the greatest country in the world, all governments possess their own flaws. The United States is no exception, our government still continues the war on poverty after many years. America continues to be polluted with poverty; impoverishment should be a concerning as it affects millions of Americans, from young to old and all in between. Welfare programs help resolve this problem, actually helping more people than we think and its abonnement would affect many. A form of public assistance was needed for the surge of joblessness experienced during the Great Depression.
At this point in time, essentially all of America was deeply moved, the government had to propose a war on poverty and lend a hand. And as a result, social security net aka welfare was created as a collective of different programs to provide monetary assistance to those with limited income (Harrison, 2002). The American dream to prosper still continues to be rooted on being achieved by individuals working extensively and tirelessly; these established set of attitudes are not unsound. Though this active culture does assist in generating disdain on welfare for the Americans supposedly not partaking in work (Schneiderman, 2008). Some working Americans don’t like to see able-bodied, non-working people get government money for doing nothing and would like to see welfare be abolished. It is an understandable concern that one would believe that all welfare recipients don’t contribute to the economy. Americans that hold this belief, stereotype all welfare recipients as lazy (Cole, 2018).
Welfare recipients are nowhere near the term lazy, many adults who receive the benefits are employed. And those who are in these programs are not in it for the long term, just to provide enough to get by, so that individuals can recover or stay above the surface momentarily (Cole, 2018). The foundation of welfare quelling starts to deteriorate, if its interior is hinged on welfare recipients being rejects of work because its false. Laziness is an outcome of the dependency some Americans hold on welfare. Some Americans bring to light the abuse of welfare. The spending on misuse items, for instance like on tobacco, alcohol, and lottery tickets (Barron, 2011). Though the misuse of welfare money is minimal, there is no need to react irrationally by declaring the resolution to this problem is to dissolve welfare programs. The health of the economy outweighs the minimal abuse of welfare. The removal would cause much more harm to the economy and welfare is an underappreciated reality.
As one of the wealthiest countries in the world, the movement of welfare programs would not only hurt those in need, but the economy as a whole. SNAP also known as food stamps, provide benefits that are considered one of rapid and advantageous configurations of economic boost for the United States (The Real Benefits of SNAP). Economic benefits reek in welfare like food stamps; they are a collective citizens funding which is imperative. These programs are important because they improve productivity and reduce social costs caused by crime, malnutrition and poor health (Ruben, 2017). Safety net programs should be surrounded about pressing moralities, not disseminating hostility in Americans. Additionally, welfare policy is opposed due to the misinformation distributed by the news; they provide a misleading image of the majority of welfare recipients being African Americans. Racial inequality is not the basis of welfare policy, though welfare should be race neutral.
Race is often referred back to in numberless instances by those who despise these types of programs. In the article “ Who Really Receives Welfare and Government Entitlements” by Nicki Lisa Cole, who has received various degrees in sociology provides overview on government entitlements. Cole provides evidence that 35 million white people participated in one of the six major government assistance programs that year explains that in reality the recipients of welfare. Cole explains measured by race, white individuals outnumber people of color. People who use welfare programs are many of all races and ages, the media falsely advices to the public that a selected group of people abuse these programs. A group that is always overlooked that gets a hold of welfare is our future selves, an implication that senior citizens also get a hold of welfare. Welfare sometimes is seen as a negative thing , and it’s always fixed on the children, mother, and poor group. People believe that welfare undermines work ethic. In retrospect, welfare does not have the possibility of undermining work ethic, technically it encourages valuable work ethic.
Taken into consideration that welfare is received by senior citizens after their years of admirable and loyal employment. Social security is beneficial to those who receive an amount of assistance to pay for their expenses, as they are not able to work as they use to (Harrison, 2002). The proposal of stripping millions of Americans of Social Security would not be practical as it would effect earnest individuals, an ultimately young Americans in the future. A form of welfare that is rarely viewed as welfare is Social Security, if it was stirpped from those using it, the effects would be catastrophic. Food is a necessity, not a want. People who have to decide to due to the factor of money have the opportunity of coming across food stamps. Welfare programs, such as food stamps, have provided progression because they have produced results.
Food stamps have shown those results, they have shown that they lower the poverty rate. Without food stamps the poverty rate would increase by about 8 million more Americans (Kasperkevic, 2014). These results show that this type of welfare program is beneficial to keep the poverty rate down and give food to those in need. The extraction of food stamps would leave many with empty bellies, proving hardship to all dependants on welfare. People have witnessed or encountered homelessness sometime in their lives. Possibly the slight dash past a squatting person in possession of a written cardboard cut out expressing a helping hand and lacking personal hygiene. Homeless and poverty are linked, and poverty is linked to welfare programs, therefore homeless and welfare programs are linked. When an individual exist in the realm of poverty a slight misstep can lead them to become homeless. As many as 45 millions of Americans are in poverty, government assistance is a very important functional elevator for those in need not to fall behind (Reese et al., 2010).
This is definitely a concerning number that cannot be disregarded, but by wanting to remove government assistance programs one would certainly disregard. The immediate removal of the programs would probably destroy the barrier concerning the impoverished, dropping them in a foundation which would be troublesome to extricate oneself from. Poverty should be a serious concern for all Americans. Although poverty is often disregarded, some Americans have a way of alluding to welfare, but not acknowledging the problem of poverty. Many suggest welfare negatively and want to dissolve the programs of many recipients than imagined. The first step in solving any problem like poverty is recognizing there is one. Americans have shifted from the war on poverty, to a war on poor people. The possibility of removing these programs on the recipients would damage them, and ultimately the nation as a whole. Instead of wanting to pull the welfare from under, there should be an accumulation of contributing solutions. References Baran, M. (2011, March 15). Misuse of welfare money is minimal, data show.
