In two stories “Young Man’s Folly”, written by Susan Michalicka and “Flight”, written by Doris Lessing, there are a lot of similarities. In “Young Man’s Folly’, the author tells a story about a boy and his mother, that by boy’s foolishness of his father are left alone. The boy is not very happy, so he blames his mom that he doesn’t have his father anymore. However, at the end the boy realizes that his mom’s the one that truly loves him.
One the other hand, in the story “Flight”, the writer is telling a story about and old man who’s not able to let go o his granddaughter, as in the past he had a similar situation with his daughter. At the end he’d understood what love is all about. The main idea of these nvo stories is change in main characters, and how as the time passes they realize what’s right. What I saw was that each main character changes at the end of each story but yet still the title has an numerous meaning.
Symbolism plays the main role in context of change in characters. In “Flight”, a grandfather changes his way of thinking by giving (symbolizing) freedom to the bird. As in deeper thought of it, it means he’s letting his granddaughter to hoose the right path that she wants to follow. (Prove in the text) An old man said: – “Now you can go”. Which in the text was a reference to the bird but really these four words symbolized that his granddaughter is free to go.
In “Young Man’s Folly”‘, the change occurred in the boy when at the end he’d understood that real love is where his mother was. But what hurt the boy so bad was a confusion that his dad changed, he did not understand why he needed “more space”, or why “finding himself” if he has everything he ever needed with them. Luckily mother of the boy stayed the same, and it was er love that helped him get through his crisis of change. In both stories the main characters are upset because of the change that other characters made in their life.
Both characters didn’t understand the changes, and didn’t like them, change caused both characters to leave(granddaughter and father). Two stories are very similar, the ending of each story is caused by the change of the main characters during the story. In Man’s Folly” boys father left after change was made, though in “Flight” the granddaughter was free to leave after her granddad changed. Everything in these two stories is influenced by CHANGE.
